SHAH, February 24. Mr William Hofman, principal of the firm of William Hoffmann and Co., merchants and commission agents, has committed suicide by shooting himself.
THE CHINESE NAVY.
ROBBERY WITH VIOLENCE.
At the Criminal Sossions, this morning, the Chief Justice, Sir Francis Piggott sentenced Lai Yau, Lai Hing, Ho Shiu Ching, loung Ching and Cheung Kwai, who were charged with armed robbery with violence, to five years' hard labour ench, the first to receive twelve strokes and the other four twenty-four strokes, the jury having returned a verdict of guilty.

Sir Robert dealt hardly at all with the Far East, but gave his delighted hearers a number of reminiscences of Ireland and comments on events, winding up with a piece of poetry descriptive of the beauties of his native land that was recited with aridont feeling and acclaimed by the Ulster patriots with tremendous enthusiasm,
Sir Robert told his audience that among his cosmopolitan staff connected with the Imperial Maritime Customs of Chias he had any Itishmen, several of them from Ulster, and he could any that they not voly satisfied their chief but did erodit to their country.
