NEWS FROM THE HOMELAND,
The Contral Conservative Office has doided not to support any candidate at the general election who does not accapi unreservedly the Tarif Reform programime 2 laid down by Mr Balfourat Birmingham. Tais, says the L. and O. Expres, will vitally affect the Unionist Free Foodors, and the decision has quickly been followed hy an attack upon Mr Stewart Bowles in Norwood, where the local Conservative Council passed resolution withdrawing their support from him, and by threats of a similar attack upon Lord Robert Cecil in Marylebone. The number of Unionate who are the subjects of severe criticism for their attitude on the fiscal question has recently steadily diminished, and there now only 17 M.P.'a who are hostile to Tariff Reform or whose views are doubtful.
The Labour party is making elaborate preparations to increase its representation in Parliament when the general election comes. The annual report states that 38 additional candidates have been selected, and that constituencies have already been chosen for: 14 of these. In eight cases entirely new seats are to be attacked. Another substantial increase in the mom bership is reported, the total now number. ing 1,140,286, as compared with 1,072,413 at the end of 1907. This will be increased during the year by the affiliation of the miners, with a membership of nearly 500,000.
The death is announced of Mr Robert Henry Boyun, of Hampton Wick, Jate Principal Surveyor in his Majesty's Office of Works. The death occurred shortly after operation for which he had entered
