(From Our Oton Correspondent.)
ORINESE NEW YEAR NOLIDAYS.
February 2.
The Chinese Holidays are over once more, and work has been resumed as usual daring the past work. There seems to be a great lack of uniformity as to the mourning for the late Emperor, as many people bave shaved while many others have evidently refrained from doing so, to judia by the ' length of black hair now visible. It will not be before the beginning of tho Chinese Recoud moon that everybody will resume thair usual appearance. Business in still very dull, in common, apparently, with many other parts of the world. It into bo hoped that business prospects will very

worthy of study. The present Secretary and Superintendent of Police has done his work splendidly during the past year, su the Report well show. He refers to the large number of "undesirables" deported tomoy and Kulangsu from the Straits Settlement during the year, no less than 287, as well as to many others of various nationalities who visited na during the visit of the American Flect, as being responsible to a large ortout for the many robberies that ocenrred. His opinion that we need a larger staff of Police is undoubtedly correct, for it cannot be denied that the staff at bir disposal is certainly not large enough to cope with all the needs of the island He does remarkably well with the men' he has under him, sad the sidents have cause for thankfulness that the island is es well looked after.
In consequence of the steps already taken against the Opium habit, only 1 shops were open in December, and one half of these have been closed this Jan., in accordance with arrangements decided upon at the meeting held in June last. The rest are given till the 31st of March! 1910, though it is quite likely than some of those may voluntarily close before that date:
