DEATH OF A SHANGHAI
WORTHY.
The death of another old China hand is recorded in the North China Daily News, Mr James Hall, late of Messrs Butterfield and Swire, dying at Rothesay, Irle of Bute, on January 2nd. Our contemporary says that he received his early training in the, at one time, well-known firm of Buchanan, Hamilton and Co., in Glasgow, and came cut to Shanghai in 1870 to the firm of John Jarvie and Co., of which the Et J. I. Miller and Fullerton Henderson were the heade. When this firm gave up Ausinesa he joined Messrs Butterfield and Swire, as book-keeper, and remained with them until he retired, on a wall earned pen- sion, in April 1900. Mr Hall rapidly became a favourite in the Settlement and took a leading part in the community. He was an officer of No. 1 1 Co., Mih-ho-loong Rifles (now "A" Co.) and was a good shet, win

Being a Garman Challenge Cup in light weight he was in much demand as coz of the crows of the Shanghai Rowing Club, and steered many crews to victory, among them the Sents Fights. In the old days of rowing on the Booolow Creek his cheery voice could be heard of an evening encouraging his crow, long before the na was in sight. He sud the late Dick Hunter. were almost invincible as Double Scullers and he was also one of our best billiard players Jamie Hall was untrors- ally liked, and it is doubtful if ever ha made an enemy in his life. Un bis fiftieth birthday he was entertained to tiffin at the Clab by the leading mon of Shanghai, and the hearty manper in which his health was toasted testified to the esteem in which his ¿was held.
