The matter of the failure of Hongkong) to send a team to Shanghai during the Chinose New Year Holidays has again boen opened up in consequence of a letter which appeared in the China Mail above the signature of the Secretary of the Hong. kong Amociation Football Club, and which purported to be a full explanation of the circumstances, involved. That it cannot by any means be regarded se such by the unbiassed observor; however, is quite obvious in view of certain definite state. ments mailing from Shanghai.
Even granting that in the #rst instance the invitation was from club to club will the Secretary deny that subsequently Shanghai exquired as to the possibility of a sido being raised from all the clubs in the Colony And, if this was so, why did he not make men fon of it in the letter which be, or his committee, would fain have considered in the light of a plain statement of the facts of the case? Of course, it may be retorted that the Hongkong Club could not be expected to concern itself in raising a team from outside its ranks. But oven so, they might at least, who themselves ausble to respond to the invitation, have had the courtesy to hand the matter over to the Horgkung Foot ball League, who, whether the Club cares to recognise it or not, are in touch with practically the best talent in the Colony, Pat no; apparently the Club was suffici, ently presumptuous to take upon itself to reply for the whole of Hongkong!
In view of these facts, the Club has certainly shann italf in a very bad light- and its acalings in this matter will not onhance its reputation as a boy of sports- mon. Indeed, it seems very much like a case of the dog in the manger-We can't go and we're jelly sure uubody else shall!
