RAMBLING NOTES,

1909--Since I wrote last week we have Been the waning of the old and the dawn of the new year. The old year, which has just passed out to bake its place with the ghosts of ather byegone days, entered the world just as bright and cheerful as does the present. It came in heralded with the aual good wishes for a prosperous year and if we have out reaped such a harvest of Food things as we anticipated let us hope the welvemonth which lies before us may bring in its train that bounteous prosperity to the Colony which it was went to enjoy in the Fours gone by, the days which Sir Thomas Sutherland writes about, when all the Taipans were youthfol, all the Hougs were princely, and every man Jack in the Colony was assured of making a fortune within ten years. But, I must not forge, those brave times belong to fifty years ago. At any rate, let's hope we are all in for a batter time in 190 than was vouchsafed in the year whose sands have just petered out.

ADI. S. FUERST BISMARCK BÂND AT THE ORIENTAL HOTEL

The numerous patrons and many friends of the Oriental Hotel and Mr Matthaey the proprietress, turned up in unusally larg numbers on Friday evening, when the celebrated band of S.M.8, Fuerst Birck gure an admirable programme of music during and after clucor. Many had to be rotated en account of the large attendance. The menu was excellent and refected the grestost credit on Mra Matthaey who is well-known for the efficiency of the culinary department of the Oriental Hotel. After dinner a social evening was held when several of the guests indulged in dancing to the enjoyable strains of the mume of the band. Altogether a very pleasant time was spent and patrons expressed themselves highly delighted with the capital arrangemente made by Mrs Matthaey for the comfort and convisilence of her guests.

AN INDIAN NOBLEMAN UNES CHAMBERLAIN'S' COUGH REMEDY.

YOU will coo by the following that

The weather duri. ; the holidays was simply glorious and he must be a rosy cur- wudgeon who did not enjoy the daylight bours to the full. Business people would like to settle down to hard work again, but that disturbing factor, Chinese New Year,

Chamberlain's Cough Remedy is & Toome shand, coming off this year about favorite in the palace as well as with the the end of January. Truly, our holidays humbler people in India: For the past Four years I have been getting large supplies como too closely packed together. If now

of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy, not only the Chinese calendar had only been so oblig for myself but for frioade and relatives. ing as to fix the Celestial New Year Scaupot say enough in praise of this remedy. months further on we should get a brank. It is a never falling cough and cold medicine "supply of it in roy just when we need it most, in the middle and I always keep

of the sweltering days; wo should appre-house, and in His Highness's, the Elaya ciate it then very greatly. But, hold, the Bajah's palace. It is one of my traveling pandemoniura let loose at China New Year companions. I shall never fool tired of would scarcely be endurable in the middle recommending it as I have been doing in the past.". Rusos Row, Private of summer, so perhaps it is best as it is,

Seorotary to His Highness, the Elaya Rajah of Travancore. For sale by all semista and storekeepers.

While on the subject of the New Year, I should like, with the Editor's permission, to reprint the following lines. They aro by one of the sweetest lady singers in England:

"How shall we make the coming year

of time His answer comes in moments to the

noble temple, with foundations wrought In the broad pavements of eternity!

I hope Mr Deames Fuller's Organ Recital at St. John's Cathedral next Tues day will meet with an adequate reward- crowded congregation and a substantial ad. dition to the Choir fund. He deserve much warmer support than has hitherto been given.

Thear that His Excellency the Governor's populus Private Secretary, Mr A. J. Brackentrary, has been promoted. This is good news, and I foot dure that everyone in the Colony will be pleased indeed that bier services have been so suitably recognised by the Home Government. There is no doubt during his stay in the Colony he has made himself very popular, with those who had occasion to visit Government Hunes.

That was a very quiet dinner which the Committee of the China Association gave the other evening at the Hongkong Club | to Mr J. H. Scott, Chairman of the parent Committee. Why all this secrecy. I un- derstand that His Excellency the Governor made one of the finest speeches, showing the deep interest he takes in the welfare of the Colony. But all the eloquence was wasted, so far at least as the public is con- cerned. It reminds me of the once famous London catchword, Mum, please, mum!

In oy rambles during these festive times I have happened across some rather strange situations. Different people have different ways of celebrating such occasions. I koocked against three worthy loons from the far north, on Christinas Eve, and they all seemed to have been enjoying themselves very well. One of the party, whom I will Willie," was dead set on going

to sea the pictures at the Cinematograph, while the others would not listen to such a suggestion, preferring the more exhilarating fun to be got out of doing the rounds.

"I'm now eighty years old and one morning, three years ago, I was taken with a herd pain in my right side. In two days had an attack of ples (hemorrhoids), Eleeding and protrending. The doctor gave me same medicine and an' ointment for them which helped me some but I had to keep using then all the time. Then I changed to the P remedy; but it I did not age day, I would get wome. The doctor said the only help for me was to go to AI hoepital and be operated e this time, about a year ago, I went to using the Bremedies. I tried them for four or five months but did not get much help for my pilon, During this Hime sores would come on a desby part of say body. They bothered me al the time. I would get one hosted and another would come. These sores changed to eczema, accompanied, by a terrible itching. It seemed as if I !could not keep my hands from tearing my flesh. This and the plla trouble brought on an inflamed condition, Then I got the Cuticura Remedies. I wasted the affected parts with Catloura Soap and warm wafer in the morning, at noon, and at night, then need Cutl cura Ointment on the irritated our faces and Injected a quantity of Cuti- curs Ointment with a Cutleura Sup- pository Syringe also took Cuti gura Resolvent Pills three times a day.
