DRURY LANE PANTOMIME.

"Dick Whittington."

Tonight in dear ali Drary Lane will bo gathered a large and representative audience to see what may be described as the finest pantomine in the world. How it set 09 -exiloo in Hongkong longing to be home,

again, oven just for an orening, to ba within the old familar theatre and review the rapturous delights of childhood who gazing once more on the ravishing glorios of

The Lane." "Dick Whittington" is the subject of Drury Lane pautemime this year, and obco again Mr Arthur Collins will no doubt "oclipse all previous triumphs." While the subject is old "Dick Whittington" sharos with "Cinderella" the pride of being the most popular of all pan- somimo stories, with the additional aḍvaat- age of being "quite English" the treatment of the tale by Mr Hickory Wood and Mr Collins move along novel lines. It is an English story through and through. Goner- ally it develops after the first few scenes into a replica of "Sindbad the Sailor" or Robinson Crusoo," becoming on Eastern subject with the Moroces scones. But at Drury Lanus the Moxucco scene is merely an incident. The story begins and ende in England. There will be no "dark The story begine at once_in Hastaheap on St. Valentine's Day. Tho legend says that the first man a maid seen a that day will be ber husband, and vice serad. cene.

Instead of the conventional plot, which makes Dick accused of robbing the till, Mr Collins and Mr Wood holding that there is a squalid Havour about this, give the story a different twist. Dick is cist out neck and crop for making love to Alico, his master's daughter. Idle Jack, the wicked apprentice, and Sarah, the bound- keeper, who is in love with Dick, plct to bring this about. Microsco, at Drny Lano, disappears, and becomes Fantasis. Mr Collins, weary of the uaua! Eastorn **nt- Toosphere," and desiring to give his imagina- tion, and the imagination, of M. Comelli, the artist who designs the costuries und the colour schemes, full play, changes Morocco to Fantasia. It is the Prince of Fantasia that Fitzwarren, ou the verge of bank- xxptcy, desires his daughter to wed. Fantasia, like Morocco, being plagued with rata, Fantasia's Prince has come to England to replace the clothes and furniture which have been esten by the rodents.

CHURCH SERVICES.

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 27th, 1908.

UNION CHURCH,

Kennedy Road,

So Diok is turned out and goes to Highgate-hill, and sleeps, as is his wont, upon the milestone. There is a pond near by, a lovely pond, reed-covered. A fog comes up end envelops everything. But in the milesteue appears a Spirit, a fairy, a lovely creature "Persevere, Dick!" says the fairy, the Spirit of Wealth. “Do act despair! I will show you what wealth mann if rightly used." She tells Dick o pluska reed from the pond, and, as he does so, all the other reeds disappear into ite depths, and littlo fairies rise from the wetor. Dick is told always to keep this read and play upon it whan in trouble. The Spirit of Wealth looks like Alico, and the tune that Dick faye upon the road which Mr James Glover, the musical direc. tor, may be expected to utilise most whimsically suggests the motif of "Sieg-p..-Worship. Hymus 28, 57, 477, 35,

fried." All is poetry and charm. All through the visions où Highgate-hill we see Alice as Boatric to the Baute of Dick In his sleep she shows him the opportuni- tios of woulth great vision of commerce and travel, merchandise and barter, cul- minating in a superb picture of a fairy Guildhall, with Dick himself as Lord Mayor of London. This will be one of the great spectacular effects of the pantomime, and appropriately brings its First Part to & close.

The Second opens in the Harbour of Fantasia, a beautifal not, fut of life and bustle. Here arrives the ship from Eng- land, with Dick and his car and the Prince. The people are all very ragged and torn owing to the devastation of the rate. Bat we have no ugly fight between the King Ras and the Cat. The Drury Lane authors Este a much daintier idea. Dick hes his reed pipe. There are rats.

Why not the Pied Piper of Hamelin? And so it is Dick plays upon bis pipe and churms the rata from their fastueseres, to be also in their millions, of," by Dick's cat. The Prince refuses to pay the promised raward, The rabs are dead-therefore, why pay!. Again a variant of the Pied Piper. Dak blows upon his read again and all the women of Fantasia, enchanted, follow him. The Prince's harom is empty and desolate. The Prince pays up.

Biok rotams, millionaire, to London. The next great effect is Whittington 10 Bring the freedom of the City of London. From first to last there is no suggestion in the pantomime of the unral Lord Mayor's Show. Whittington, history tells us,
