There was nothing on the spot to suggest that it would become a centre of great commercial sativity, for no business of any kind had ever boen at- tempted there. It was believed that if it wore made a distributing centre that it would become flourishing, when the various railways projected from | Kengmum, Sanui and other places, met here and brought their merchandise and pas- sungers and connected these towns direct with Hongkong, and, through Hongkong, with the wider world beyond. Such in Lrief wore the idens of the projectors në the scheme, and probably their efforts will be followed with capital results. Whilst the moving spirits of the enterprise alo returned emigrants, many of the wealthy citizens of the delta have had faith enough in the project to advance large sums of uiuney to get the work 01 its way. The first thing done was the building of a river front, and the bind is built of cut granite. The material has ali beon transported thither by native boats. The wuck is fairly well done, though the facing of the top tier is not specially level, and the lines of the whole are not such as would satisfy Hongkong Governmort [-] architects.
