A very sad incident, involving the death popular member of the small foreign community, recently cocurred at Taipeh, Forosa. It appears, says the Kobe Herald, that Mr Barlow and Mr F. C. Heg, who was until recently a member.' Steamship F. Franz Ferdinand of the staff of Messrs Tait and Co's Kobe odice, went out in a boat cu the river to have a swim. Mr Hogg had got into the water and was swimming, when Mr Baddow dived of the boat and unfortunate- got into

uficulties in doop water. Mr Hogg went to the rescue and managed to get his friend to the shore. Subsequently however, Mr Barlow was carried away by the current. Mr Hogg sgoin went to his assistance and made a placky attempt gat him to land. The drowning man clutched him, however, and, after a des perato effort to gain a place of safety, Mr. Hogg, finding that they were both drowning, was obliged to free himself and make for the shore, which he eventually reached with much difficulty is a complute- 1 exhausted condition. At the inquest kald by the Japanese authorities the cause of Mr Barlow's death was given us heart failure. The tragic ocourenco caused the deepest regret among the foreign residents at Taipeh and much sympathy is felt with Mr Hogg at the failure of his gallant efforts to save his friend.
