The Osaka journal leames from a business: man, who has just returned from a tour of inspection of the camphor trade in America and Europe, that there are now in France, Germany, and Belgium six factories where artificial camphor is made from oil of turpentine, and the process of manufacture is showing great progress. The price of camphor is consequently steadily declining, while the quality is improving. Synthetic camphor is rapidly encroaching on the mar- ket of natural camphor, the artificial product being found wet to be inferior to natural | camphor as material for making celluloid. When Messrs Samuel Sannel & Co. were relieved of the agency, it is said that a syndicate was formed to boycott Japaneso camphor, because the Japanese Monopoly. Bureau had raised the price from 1868. per picul to 1065., by the great loss of celluloid manufacturers, whose profts dwindled con•. siderably. This action on the part of the Monopoly Baresit excited ill-feeling among its customers, and some of them made an agreement not to use the camphor sold by the Japanese Government.
