The choking off of the volunteer move- ntent has been receiver with very mixed feelings in various parts of the country. By some battalions it has been treated jocularly, while others have given angry vent to theirfemotions. In the curly boura of the morning of All Fools' Day two men careping a coffin, escorted by about fifty men of the Fifth West Middlesox Volunte teer Corps, some in uniform and aevo tự with rifles, sat out from the headquarters of the regiment, at St. John's Wood, and

"marched to the Duke of Cambridgeje statuo, in Whitehall. There the men forined up and the coffin was placed at the foot of the statue and a wreath was laid on it. The cotin bore the following inscription :—

In memory of the volunteer forces. killed by net of Parliament March 31, 1908, altor lifty years' faithful servics." Missed, but it wanted.”

Such a large crowd gathered round the mourners that the police found it neCERRATY ts interfere. As the rolunteers refused to take the coffin. away their ring leader was arrested and was conveyed with the coffia to Canton Row policy station. No charge was preferred against the man, but the

The doal position o the new arity will not be known till June 30, however, as the men are given till theù to decide whether they will re-enlist in

the force.
