The messenger and the gate man, 2193 reinforced by three other consalar servants who had arrived upon the scene with sticks, and several gembers of the Chinese police turning up, the Consul, with their assistance, soperated the combatants, and lodged the postman with three other Japanese in the gate house, where they were held under gined while the Japanese, police were aumtumed.

Consul, armed with a revolver, put his four prisoners into two Chinese carts and conrayed them under police escort to the Japanese Consulats, where he handed them over to Mr Kato, the Consal-General.

The American Consul personally gave a full account of the assault as here reported, insisting that trepass upon a Consulate with a foreign gand assaulting and drag ging a foreign Consul's sersants into the highway could not be regarded as a light

matter.

In the afternuen of the same day, an: axtraordinary note was received from the Japanese Consul, stating that the account of the prisoner differed from that of Mr Straight, and requesting from the latter a written statement with a map of the American Consulir promises. There was no word of apukgy or regret, an unpre- cedented piece of disregard of consulari courtesy.

The American Consul promptly declined to balance his statements against the verbal declaration of Japanese coolies; and ern. phasized again the enormity of the offence. To this note Mr Kato replied by sending a clerk to draw a map, making a brief rums: of the Consul's statements.

It is to be hoped that an amicable Bettlement has been reached between the Consular representatives at Mukden. In itself the incident is necessarily of mero local importance, although when taken in connexion with other events of a similar naturo it is hally, to be regarded as coincidence. The broader significance of the affair will only lie in the diplomatie: attitude assumed by the Japanese.
