Cheese also shows a steady increase from £1,000,000lb., in 1901 to 14,800,000lb. in 1900, but very little of this is exported.
MANUFACTURES, There were 11,581 factories in the Cou! monwealth in 1906, employing 220,000 hands, against 11,488 factories and 195,000 hands in 1903. The clothing and textile trades employed 62,600 hands in 1906, metal works and machinery 43,400, food and drink pronation 36,72); books, paper, painting and engraving, 19,600; and working wood, 17,347.
