present arrangement will ultimately end
in amalgamation. As the two companies between them own over 300 steamers | aggregating one and three-quarter million tons, rnn nearly ninety, different services, and have ramifications all over the globe, it is evident that British shipping will have to face woma severe competition. This, I hear, is more particularly feared in the Far Eastern truda, in which the German com- panies have already a very firm hold. But tho services to East and West Africa are also to be improved, and in connection
with the Atlantic trade further efforts are to be made to capture the rich Continental passenger trilic. I hear today that the SOLE PROPRIETORS of Takrebimu. A correspondent writes to the Madras Mail:-During the last few months diabolo
I has become the most fascinating gamo amang all classes of people in Europe; but afterall it is not a now pastime. Enthusiasts havo tried to trace its origin and develop- ment and overal countries are claiming The honour of having given it birth. To the list of those already claiming this honour may justly be added Malabar. In. Malabar, there is a clave of peoplo exiled Kornvas who have from time immemorial played this gamu almost in the same man- ner at its Western devotoos do at the prosent tine. The people are out with mostly in the southern parts of Malabarı Cochin and Travancore, and they speak thu Malaysian language with a singsong Becent which easily distinguishes them from other people. They are of wandering
habits. The men are clever acrobats and |repedunders but those of more settled fabite are engaged in agriculture and other in- dustries. Those beautiful grass mats known

I DIVIDEND declared for the Half- Fear ending 31st December, 1907, at
as Palghant mats are woven by this people. Their women are fortune-tellers and ballad singers. Their services are also in demand for boring the eats of girls. The mopo dancers perferin many wonderful fonts while balancing themselves on the rope, among them being the playing of disbain while walking to ate fro on a tight rope. The Komes acrobat spins tho wooden spool on string, attached to the ends of two bamboo sticks, and throws it up to the height of a coccanut-tree, and when it comes down he receives it on the string, to be again throwu up. There are exporte among the who can receive the spool on the string without oven looking at it. There is no noteworthy difference in the structure and shape of the spool used by the Kuravas and those of Europe, except that the Malabar apparatus is a solid wooden thing a little larger and heavier than the Western toy. It has not yot emerged from the crudo stage of the village carponter's skill, and cannot boast of rubber tyres and other embellishments which adorn the imported article ; but it is heavy enough to cause a nasty injury should it hit the performer while falling. The Koravus are a very primitive people, but as nerobate and fope dancers they have continued their profession for genocations past, and there is no doubt that they have been expert diabolo playaca for many years. They are a prople who have never travelled and they could not have, therefore, im- ported the game from elsewhere. These facte conclusively prove that diabolo is an Indian game known in these parts from vory early days. As for its introduction into the West, it may be that Europona travellers carried and introduced it in to their countries or it may have had so independent origin thera.
