THE KAISER AND KIAO.

CHAU.

Why Wei-Hai-Wot Was Rejected.

The German Emperor hus publicly claims. ed the honour of having chasin Kino Chau as the territory which Germany should lease from China, thereby contesting the contention put forward by Professor Wil- liam Oncken that Bishop Anzer, tha lead of the Roman Catholic missions in China, "disenvored" Kiao-Chau and reconescuderd it to the German Government Professor Oncken has just written a book dealinig, smong other things, with German enter. prise in the Far East, in which he attri

butes the choice of Kin-Chau to Bishop Anzar. When the book was shown to the Emperor his Majesty wrote in his own handwriting in the maagia opposite the statement regarding Amer's alleged "discovery" of Kino-Chau :——

"This is not right. I chase Kino-Chau after I had caused Samah lay and Wei hai-wai to be inspected, and had come to the conclusion that they were both totally unsuited to my parprise. After further investigations, I decided that Kiao-Chau Was the most suitable territory, principally otring to the good hinterland. Anzer had nathing to do with my decision."

The German Press circulates to-day the Emperor's declaration respecting the obice of Kine-Chan. It is noteworthy what stress the Kaber laya on his own personal

ia afun initiative in the matter, and worthy that his Majesty decided that Wei- hai-wai was worthless before he velcolad Kiao-Chau.
