CHINESE I QUADRON IN JAVA.

The Chinese community at Batavia gava
a grand feast on December 14 to Tan Sze- txe, the Imperial Commissioner, and to the officers of the Chinese squadron, The press representatives were the only Europeans invited. The Commissioner was attended' by naval ofloora, and by Dr Lim Boon Keng, of Singapors. A banquet, enlivened by music, was followed by a brilliant display of fireworks. Dense croids were presont: The Commisstonor and his suito then went up country to Buitenzorg, where he had great difficulty in making hisself understood by the Java-boin Chinose, who had to avail themselves of Dr. Lim Boon Keng's services interpreter. The Java Bode hears that the Commissioner did noth- ing worth mentioning towards furthering trade between Java and China. In
fist,
the export trade of the Java Chinese has but four points of contact with the Chinose Empire. He had as little access in raia- ing money unang them, bat gave away about one thousand guilders for the boneft of curcation among the Chinese at Batavia. The squadron left that port for Sourabaya on December 15.

In eight days time, the Assembly laid
before the Governor General its opinions
on the varicus subjects brought up thei
ally. On November 22 the Assembly
ofosed the sittings with an address by the
spanker
and a speech by M. Beau, the
Governor General.
The speaker, a a native, dwelt upon the inexperienced us it was in Assembly political discussion, having sought to the best of its power to express public AS voiced
among the people of the Colonos
on the varines matters brought before the mamber, by the Government. He thank- ed the Governor-General for the happy thought of thus giving to people a large share in the administration of the Colony. The members had endeavoured to prove themselves worthy of the confidence of the Government.
The Assembly declared in favour of simplifying the system of direct taxation, and asked for the abolition of the market 105.
It urged the need for improying methods of local government in the country districts, and suggested reforms in the assessment system. The body favoured compulsory education for all boys between 2 and 13 years of age, and the fining of parents who neglect to send their children to school. It declared also in favour of sovere measures against lepers and of establishing Government dispensaries in the country districts
The Governor General upon this thanked the Assombly for giving the Government its help in solving the questions raised, and stated that he highly appreciated its labeurs. The Assembly, it niny be added, kept within its restricted powers, and fol lewed businesslike methods of procedure, to the disappointment of pessimista.
