(From Our Correspondent.)
TIENTEN, May 4.
During the past fortnight mysterious
red finger prints have been appearing on the door posts of houses at Tientsin.
The natives are greatly concerned and attribute the marks to divine origin, be-
lieving them to be of grave significance. The officials are alarmed at the large quantities of arts that have been inl ing their way to Tientsin.

Terrible Damage.
(From Our Curreapotulent.)
Claxton, May 3. The explosion which centred at the Wing Chun powder magazine on Tharaday afternoon was of a terrific eslare and work- ad terrible hayoë amongst the surrounding habitations
As far as maʼbe ascertained K hous collapsed, 21 person, were killed, 100 were seriously wounded and 300 slightly wound- ed. People were blown to pieces, dis membered and mutilated by the force of the explosion. A man's head was blown into an enting houso a long way, soyu
4 Chinese paper, whilst stones and picos of the building weighing over 100 cattles, were hurled thousands of feet. Trees were prooted, interred cuttina in neighboring gmvoyard wore exposed, and a wide area of houses oœur by was completely dovar- tated.
The effects of the explosion were felt monsiderable distances away. Portion of
the roof of the far-Eamed Five Storied Pagoda was blown away, and about yo yards of the City wall in the vicity of the North Gato collapsel.
-
Up to the momout it is impossible to estimato the real extout of the dunage. A wide aren was affected and ill-colitioned houses far removed from one another have fallen down. It will be some time before the total of these is obtained.
|
The shockpeaused by the explosion alaum- ed the whole of the inhabitants of the rity and when first fears were quelled almost all the populace sought the available raf lops to ascertain what had happened. The sight which met their gaza was appalling--s vast and dense volume of muoke und duɛt ascending far into the sky from the locality of the magazine.
It was innocdiately guessed what had happened and a large! concourse of excited people rushed towards the scene of demolition from all quarters.
Officials were early on the scene and an army of resetors were set at work to assist the wounded and recover the dend. The temples in the vicinity wore utilised for the tiras being as hospitals, and were soon illud with toru and bleeding bumanity.
So far the cause of the explosion has not boon discovered, but the finding of the remains of a magazine official with a pípo clasped in one hand, leads the officials to believe that a fire was stated by smoking. Whether this is so will never be known. No-one who was in the immediate vicinity of the magazine at the time is now alive.
