The Harrison Linn steamet Barrister " landed at Liverpool recently's young Am- erican named Thomas Anderson, who had been employed by the Florida East Chant Railway Company as a labourer. Ander- on and a number of other men were engaged on the construction of the Long Key railway viaduct, which forms part of A schema for carrying a railway from the Florida mainlsud over numerous islands to Key West, and they were accommodated for sleeping purposes on a house bust which was anchored of Long Key. On the morning of October 18 the cy- alono which broke over Florida cauteed the boat to drag her anchor, drift out to son, and eventually become a total wreck. All the men, 140 in number, were thrown into the water. Anderson, who does not know whether any of his colleagues wors saved, clung to a plank and was tossed about from 6,30 in the morning until 10 at night. During the greater part of this time he could see, some distance away, two other men clinging to a part of the roof of the wrecked bost, but when darkness came on he loat sight of tris comrades. Eventually the steamer Barrister" crabed into the. plank to which Anderson was clinging, and ho succeeded in attracting attention and was picked up.

A terrible story of shipwreck is unfolded by the survivors of the Liverpool 'afoomer "Neines," which was abandoriod in the North Atlantie, the rescued men being brought home to the Morsoy last month by the Johnston liner Vedamore." The **Nemca" was on a voyage'from St. John (N.B) to Manchester, with cargo of timbor. When a fortnight out from port the condenser broke down and the engines wore #opped. A north-west gale was blowing, and thore was a tremendous yon. The "Nemea" was aloned round broad- -side to the zesa and became quite unman- ageable. The dock dargo of deals hifted with the brary rolling of the ship, and eventually was swept overboard together with the maste and bulwarke, The vessel tosard helplessly in the trough of the, sea. making water at a great rate, All hands worked desperately at the parupa to keep themselves funt: All the fires were ex. tinguished, and the plight of the crew was most miserable. Ono great wave swept clean off the ship the master, Capesin Shaw, and six others, but Captain Shaw and four others managed almost by a miracle to got back to the ship. Thogther two-Clellan, the third engineer, of Manchester, and Ray, a moss-room buy, of Osrdiff were never econ again, Shortly afterwards the "Vedamore" came to the rescus. A volunteer crew, including the chief officer-n Japanese-and the third officer, put off in a boat, Captain Henry manoeuvring the "Vedamore" to give the toat shelter and using oil freely to braak the waves. The "Vedamoro's” boat made two successful trips to the "Nemes," bringing of most of the crew. The restainder succeeded in getting away in their own lifeboat. The rescue was elected 210 miles west of the Fastnet and about 50 miles from Liverpool.

We have received from Mesers Aagaard Thorneen and Co. a copy of "Norwegian Shipping In The Far East", which is. compiled by Mr Bjarne Aagaard, of Hong. kong, and is in its third year of publication. The return gives a great deal of interesting information as to the business done by Norwegian ships during the last year and remarks that the Far Eastern market in slightly better condition than at the same period last year, no doubt owing to so raany boats having gono home,

The report continues:--

"It is of course impossible to predict

with any dogmen of certainty which way

the market will take next year. Opinions amongst exports differ widely, but we
