A DARING ADVENTURER.

LONDON, Oct. 19.

Josiah Smith, known under the theatri- os namo of Frederick MoLood, a robust and good-looking actor, has just been Bobt to guol for nine months for defrauding a pretty girl out of little less than £20,

McLeod is known as a pirate among women's affections. His father WSS & mechando, who spent all be could easyn on giving the son a first-class education. He got under an assumed name suother job as school teacher, and soon afterwards married another woman, who had a little money. He Becced her and again disappeared."

MoLood fed to South Africa, but was arrested thers and brought back. He fleceed the women in the companies and became so notoriour that no one would give him employment. Then be began to prey in barmaids, telephone girls, and post-office clerks. At one time he was engaged to as many as sins women and had to write nine copies of each letter.

When he met Gertrude Juliffe, a 20-year- old girl, be struck a snag. Miss Jalifo kcoope a tobacconist store and has a good business. MoLeod bought his cigarettes there and soon get on friendly terms with the prietres. They wore soon ohgaged. And ben came the quick touches, McLood slao got all his cigars and cigaret- tos free.
