TUNNELLING THE BEHRING

STRAITS.

Yurther Particulars of a Great

Project.

According to a dispatch from St. Peters- burg, the American syndicate of civil -engineer, of which Leicy de Lobel is president, ha almost succeeded in arrang- icg with the Russian Government for the construction of a tunnel under the Dehring Strait, connecting Siberia with Alaska,

This tounel will be of inumero com- the *ercial importance, If one looks map of Asia and draws a line from Irkutsk Wiorechnickotyk, the capital on the

to

enstorn shore of the Behring Strait, and from there to Noma, on the opposite elda of the Strait, in Alaska, one has the reute of the suggested Una.

ΒΕ

The American engineers slate that the railroad throught Russian territory can be built for 1,250 000,000 franes, and they have laid before the Tear detailed plans for a tannel under the strait, which in Bl kilometres wide and about 40 metres deep. The tunnel is to consist of three sections, cach of 20 kilometres in length and this is made possible becauso of two small island which are situated in the strait.

The syndicate has promised to turn over the tunnel to the Russian Government without any ramuneration. It doel bot ask for any interest on the capital which it nts istends to invent and which amounts to about $10,000,000 a year, and will even bind itself to order from Russian greet anufacturers structural steal amounting to the value of 300,000,000 francs, and tu give wraplopment only to Russian babourers and mechanics during the construction.

All that the syndicate sales in return is a ninety-year franchise, so the Russian Government shall be ablo en tuy them t at the end of thirty years.

The syndicate furthermore promises to build a telephone fine all the way through Siberia which is to be controlled by the Russian Governmom, and to found a longo Siberian bank for the purpens of advancing money to colunists willing to take up land in the carrier through which the mad will

P

In return for this it asks to be granted a

strip of land on each side of the groad welve kilomotor wide

The plan has the indorsement of the former Minister of Railroada, Prince

Khilkof, and or her Russians of epiaence, and

the Tear is expected to affix a hia signature to the document granting the franchise and the privileges asked for by the American syndímro before many wools are passed.

The first news of B. de Lobol's growt anterpriko esale out Reveral years ago in Seattle and the manner in which it wa

btained is told by the Seattle Timex.

Jackson B. Corhet was a reporter on ong of the Santtle spere. He was a graduate of the State University and bis first news. papar work was reporting university news for one of the Seattle dailies. Corbet was covering botals and one day he noted on the! register of a downtown hostelry the name of Laicy de Lobel, Paris, France," Corbot's news nose scented a story and he sent up a Pard. Word was sent back that M. de Lobal would be down at once and he appeared almost immodistaly. But when he come Curbet found difficulties in the way,

L

Je Lobel could not speak a word of English and Corbat we as ignorant of French as a newborn babe. But was Corbet stopped! Not a bit of it. His journalistic reputation way at stake, and his good old Irish wit cama to his roscue,

M. de Label spoke Spanish Guantly and still remembered some of the Latin he had once learned in college. Corbot had a mittering of Spanish and had been one of he best Lasin kradents at the University. She sat down on a chair opposite the Franch stranger sod for an hour wrestled with him in Spanish and Latin, badly aud shook mixed. Finally they arose hands, Corber with the supreme conscious- Dess of duty wall done under difficulting and M. do Lobol with a wholesome respect for the aggressiveness and resourcefulness of American journalism.

tut

The story that Corbet turned in to his city editor was to the effect that a ayadi. cata of which the French engineer was the hend had in mind a project which was vast and almost unbelievable ir, its extent, the dispatch from St Petersburg shows that tho plius aro about to bear fruit. It was continuous nothing more nor less than railroad from St. Petersburg to the pited: Staley, and the tunnel under Bohring Strait was to be he the keystone. M. de Loboi outlined to the reporter invet of the details as they appear in the St. Petersburg dispatch and as they have come out in Goattered news dispatches in the past two or three years. Lobel at the time of bis, visin to Seattle was on his way to Alaska to look over the ground.
