TIN IN BURMA.

There is no doubt, says the Rangoon Gazelle, that tia exists in the Nalla un sub. division of Mergul, where the nature of the land is similar to, that of the Federated Malay State lying to the south. Consider able sums have from time to time bern aank by European firms in attempts to exploit the metal, but these attempts have not been financially successful, Yet Chin- Bae minore in ounsiderable no-bers haro for many years carried on operations hero and thore over the vast tract of uninhabited Forest and hill which lies between the sea and the Siamode frontler. So remote are the spute where these workings are carried on fram the headquarters of Government, that little or no check can be ex eroined over the export of rin, and it is pro- bable hat much din fade its way out of the country without payment of royalty or record in any Custota return. It is impossible, even if it were worth while, to guard the long stretch of land frontier and stop the smuggling. The development of tin mining must be left to private en- terprise, bat much can be done by Government to encourage that enterprise. The pioneer in Nallwon is boot by manifold difioalties; there are practically ao roads in to sub-division, labour there is next to none, and facilities of communica tion with the outer world are conspicuous by their absence. Government has made no adengate attempt to develop the country and this to perhaps not to the wondered at

when there was much to be done else

where in the province, and with more sure sad certain hope of auctans. A large initial expenditure must he faced before say return can be looked for; ronde must be opened up, a proper counting service established, inducements offered to

miner to come and tile in the country. And the establishment of Government offices very largely incrossed To attract Euro- pean, capital it may be necessary to enact a- Labour Ordinance, and this would on deab expedite the infiur of sattiera, it mining operations met with any success.

THE AWAKENING" OF CHINA.

"Yep." said the distinguished traveller. "I regard the awakening of China as one of the meat striking phenomena of the present day. She has already an army of 40,000 men, who coil thair pigtails under their forage caps, dress in khaki uniform, and manoeuvre their field gans in a way that would not disgrace a European srmy,'

At this stage-two, small boys, who had bpen walking behind the distinguished traveller, stole quietly to a heap of broken bluestone by the roadside, and stuffed their pockets with missiles of convenient size.

*****As I was saying." continued the couch. travelled individual, "I could not help boing greatly impressed by the soldierly promptitude and great military efficiency of the Chinees who have been enrolled in the regiments I have met. They propose to raise an ariny of 600,000 men within the next ten years, and if the troops are sa handy with thoir vapons as those whom I
