MONDAY, JULY 9. 1906.

AMERICA'S NÁVY.

Richmond Pearson Hobson, formerly a captain in the United Status navy and hero of the "Merrimao" exploit at Santiago, Cubs, now the next Congressman from be 6th District of Alalanin, wants the United States to spend 82,060,000,03 for tha enlargement and improvement of the Davy (saya the Cullenews). Hobson's idea in that the United States should have the largest navy in the world-one able to whip the Bests of Great Britain or, perhaps, of

› Great Britain and any other powers com- bined. Ha takes himself very seriously in this matter and is gradually acquiring aatreng following. The fact is that be secored the nomination In His district which is tantamount to an election, by his vigorous enunciation of this policy. The paper adds..

The party that believas in the eternal continuity of Anglo-Saxon friendship ridi' cules the possibility of its rupture, and with Ebgland, sa an ally of Japan, stater Ita belief that the United States needs no more ships than are laid down or planned for However, it will be interd ting to watch Bobson in Congress. Rela an honest map,

* strong taip vad an enthusiast. No ne can tell what the next few years will bring forth in the complications of national rela.

PHILATISTS, BEWARE!

Poisonous Stamps.

Recently the Exencet was struck with the brilliancy of the yellow colouring used in The British threepenny postage stamp, and was somewhat startled to find os analysis that this colouring was due to a poisonous ant, chromate of land (chrome yellow). Nor Je the amount negligible, as will appear from the following figuras obtained by that journal on a quantitative analyašų, Each threepency stamp waighs, it seemar, rather more than half a grain, and thé quantity of chromate of load present was found to be 2,53 per cent. On thin basig - 70 stamps would contain one grain of poi aunous lead unit. Cases of Intal poisoning by chromato of lead are on record which illustrato the powerful paisonous effects of

This malt.

I

As little as one fifth of a grain proved i fatal to two chidren who had sucked the colouring from some pastry sdomed with armainents containing chromate of lead. The ornaments wore imitations of bars, or, perhaps wasps, and each contaiood about 1-16th of a grain of chromate of load, According to an analysis, therefore, of the threepauny postage stamp a fatal dose (oncį | fifth of a grain) of chromate of land would he contained in 14 stamps. It may be pointed out also that the throopunny portuge stamp is in considerable uso owing to the fact that it represents the minimum foe for posting through the parcels post.
