Capture of Arms,

Fifty wagons loaded with rifles and other arms, which were to be sent to Kirin from Peking, arrived at Erh-tao-kow station west of Chang-tu-fu in the early part of this month.

The Committees from Kirin went to a Yamen in Changtu and borrowed twenty soldiers to escort the wagons and started for the railway station above mentioned. However some ten Hunghutzes made a sudden appearance before they could proceed more than 14 miles and captured the rifles, arms and money, inflicting wounda on the committee, killing one soldier and binding several persons,

In Mount Pingting-shan, a distance of About 90 li from Liaoyang, over three hundred Hunghutzes are, making their beadquarters and threatening travellers.

The Imperial troops of Mukden, numbe ring two or three hundred, advanced there, to expel them on the 6th inst. and fought Fariously, but the prolonged fight could not be brought to a successful issue, merely resulting it casualities on both sides.

Sincò Feng Ling-Ko, a leader of Hunghu. tze, left the border of Liao, bandita have been active and cannot be subdued. Tho authorities of Liaoyang have supplied two hundred rifles and twenty thousand cartri- dges in order to suppress them - Sin-

SUBSIDIARY COIN IN HONG- KONG.

Hongkong appears to be having a taste of the difficulty which has been our bug- bear for many years, says the Feking and Tientsin Times, but whereas we have no option but to put up with the evils of China's rotten monetary system, the Hong- kong Government seeme strangely luke. warm about adopting any measures to try

and improve such an unsatisfactory state

of affairs. It is of course a difficult ques tion. and it is impossible to say whether any remedial measures adopted without Chinese co-operation would be of any nae, but it seems as if it would be worth while to put it to the test whether the Colony could not put a step to Chinese subsidiary coin being circulated in the Colony, and thus prevent, the enormous output of Canton Mint depreciating the value of the British coin. In one of the papers we note that it has been suggested that the usual onin should be superseded by a mere token of no intrisic wortb, which would not tempt the Chinese to divert it from a local circula. tion, but we fear such a remedy would in the long run prove worse than the disease, Curiodely enou h the Board of Revenue is gust now discussing the currency question again, and is trying to reorganise the Mints so that each instead of being responsible only to the provimet in in shall be under the direct control of This the flupu Mint in this province.

is of course the proper step to adopt and the plan followed in all other countries, but whether even this will be of any avail in China is another thing. The Chinese have discovered that minting and the regulation of supply between provinca and' province spells profit to be made, and do what we will the profit will be realised by The muddle of fair means or foul." Chinese Briance is so colossal and hopeless that financiers of all nationalities have to a great extent lost hope of being able to unravel the problem, but if remedial me Kasures are possible at the hands of foreigners anywhere, surely that place is Hongkong. so far at least as local interests are concern- ed, and we cannot but marvel that matters have been allowed to go so far. The com- plaint that the Government dishonour their own currency by placing a limit on the amount legally tenderable in subsidiary coin is not a valid one, as everyone knows, even at home the legal tender of small come and copper is strictly limited.

TANSAN'SAVOY, 13, QUEEN'S ROAD CENTRAL,

PURE, Exquisite in Flavor, Stimula- ting without Reaction, this life-giving, Natural Mineral Water gushes out of the mountain-side at Takaradzka, near Kobe, Japan.

PURITY. Its source is amid hard volcanic rock, beyond reach of contact with any human being, and it is conveyed by gravity through a rook-hewn tunnel and concrete aqueduct to a sheltered enclosure, where, without pumping, bailing, or touch of human hand, it is placed by machinery in sterilized bottles and packed in oases for shipment; thus, from its initial source protecting the water against possible taint of any kind. Percolating through several strata of virgin rock, it is saturated with their unsullied-mineral properties, and no chemical skill can duplicate the living Tangan any more then the laboratory can ovolve a living tree.

FLAVOR. Tansan gladdens the palate with a cost peculiar to itself, clean, crisp, novel, and delicious. Its appetizing taste amaoks of satisfaction, without savor of a feeling of fulness, however freely indulged in,

TANSAN is Nature's own distillation, and because of its absolute purity it blends with spirits, wines, stout, milk, and other liquors without altering the natural flavor, except to unfold it,

STIMULUS. Tansan is refreshful, and, by reason of its native qualities, it aoites the appetite and stimulates the nutritive functions. It is persistently regulative without being laxative, and it eliminates from the problem of life the ailments attributable to the liver and kidneys.

The supply is inexhaustible, being an even flow, entirely independent of surface conditions of a wet or dry season, and there will never be necessity nor excuse for the artificial manufacture of Tansan, so that it will be forever free from the obnoxious taste peculiar to all salted and fabricated waters. Visitors to the Spring find the entire plant open to inspection-there is nothing to conceal

The South Manchuria Railway, it 'is pointed out, is conducted by a special organisation, under a special commission, and its profit will steadily increase as busi. ness in Manchuria develops. The present estimate of profit is only based on the traffle of goods exported from Manchuria, but when the demand for Japanese goods in Manchuria increases and the connection with the Siberian Railway is effected, goods which require quick delivery in Europe and articles which cannot stand the beat of the tropics will be scat by the South

Manchuria Railways. A steady increase of business is therefore expected.

In reference to the railway lines to be acquired by the South Manchuria Railway Company, Japanese vernacular contemporaries observe that the track will include the Chinese Eastern Railway from Tairen or Port Arthur in the north, the

Newchwang branch from Tashichao, and the Antung Mukden line. Of these railways, the Newchwang branch and the principal line of the Chinese Eastern Railway, from Tairen to Changtu, can condi. be worked in their present tion. The line beyond Changtu is so- badly damaged that it is necessary to lay it anew before traffic can be opened. The Antung-Mukden line (184 miles) has also to be reconstructed, the present line being a light railway. These works will be commenced immediately upon the flotation of the Company. It is b lieved that the

Chipene Government will devote its share In the company to the lines between Chang. chung and Kirin, and hetween Mukden and Binminting (40 miles), which have pot in he
