of several Chinese soldiers, and had on board eight or nine guns. Needless to say, they were not of the latest type. On the outside they were clean enough, internally they gave one the impression of having passed through the Flood and of having been left untouched ever since. They would certainly have been more dangerous to the people on board than to any attacking party. Luckily, however, they were not required and wo arrived at our destination safe and sound.

Next morning we proceeded by sam pan to Kau Tsai Tong, which is twelve miles up a branch of the East River. A twelve mile walk then lay before us, Most of it was over flat and uninterest ing country. It was not until we neared the mountains that the country assumed a different aspect. Then valley after valley opened up its lovely vista of pine woods and waterfalls. Each valley had its monastery nestling in the depths of the woods several hundred feet above the surrounding plain. At the back rose steep crags which seemed to tower away into space owing to their summits being nearly always cloud- capped. In due time we came across which proved to be two huge boulders whi the approach to the Pák Hok or White Crane Monastery. A few moments later we were welcomed by the howling of many dogs. The priests, however, came to our rescue before we were torn to pieces and we were escorted to the guest room. The Pák Hok is a-Tauist Monastery, so the priests do not shave their heads at all, but do their hair up

Next day we visited several other monasteries. The Wong Lung (perhaps so named after the celebrated magazine) and the Wa Shau Toi were particularly fine.

The surroundings were a very feast of mountain scenery. The priests showed us the marvels of each place and the most picturesque spots in the neighbourhood. We had read of a forest, inaccessible alike from above or below. You could look down from a and see the monkeys at play, crap their babies to and fro The tossing

When about 500 feet from the top we came to a little stream which we thought would be a delightful spot for Tiffin. So we put our tinned nicat into the water to keep it cool and our box of biscuits in the long grass. We had seen no one for a couple of hours before, and the aneroids told us we were 3,500 feet up, so we had no fear of their being stolen. After enjoying the view at the summit and gloating over the prospect of a well-earned meal we arrived back at the same place an hour later Our guide searched for the "Ai-ya The fairies have taken food.

He carried about his own kitchen and did not give one the im- pression of a man cultivating the fairy spirit. His departure was signalised by great tumult and the blare of trumpets, and then the procession filed away through the woods.

I was now our turn to say farewell, or rather au revoir: so we inade our way back to the Kau Tsai Tong. Wp found a junk ready to sail for Shek Lung. The fare for the 12 mile was 5 cents per head. There was a strong wind and current in our favour, so we made about six miles an hour. We did not stop to land passengers on our way, but the junk just skimmed the banks, as a swallow turns aside to catch a fly, and the passengers jumped off bag and baggage, without the speed being in any way diminished. It was all very skilfully managed.

On arriving at Shek Lung we found the authorities in Canton had been ́ ́attentive enough to inquire about us, but our trip was at an end, and we did not find out what their wishes were with regard to us. If they were good, they were certainly fulfilled, as the Lob Fau Mountains are a very pleasant memory.-R. E. O. BIRD., in the Yellow Dragon.

CANTON, June 20. The section of the Yuet. Han Railway, from Canton to Fatshan, seems to have deteriorated from bad to worse since it was handed back by the Americans to China. Some of the railway stations along the line are bullt of bamboo, and are the resort of gamblers and opium amokers, who sneer at lady passengers, and take every opportunity to steal that is presented. A ride on the line at the present time is by no means a pleasant trip, and this dis- graceful state of affairs reflects the greatest discredit on the management.

It will be observed that these figures aro difficult to reconcile. The Hochi's state ment works out at 1,500.000 men for the Army and 50,000 men for the Navy. Finally, if it be true that the Army is to have an oppropriation of 123 millions and the Navy 17, then it would follow the troops were only seven times as numerous as the sailor, which is obviously incredible. Very likely this method of averages is inapplicable.

AH BIN'S RETORT.

Which I wish to remark,

And in terms that are plain That for aunding that's dark And sheer legerdemain The Chinaman plays second fiddle,

Whatever Bret Harte mey maintalu.

Ah Sia is my name,

And I frankly confess

With regard to the same

Its appropriateness,

But, for certain political reasons,

The Rand is my present address,

For the Britisher brought

Me to labour out here..

Upon terms which I thought "Advantageous and clear;

And, compared with my own native country,

It seemed a delightful career,

But no sooner had I

Settled down in the place,

Than he started to sigh

And to say to my face

That my pleasant and peaceful position

Meant Britain's undying disgrace,

Now it seems rather hard

That he thus should behave

1-And decide to regard

Me as naught but a slave; Inexactitudes terminologio.

I view with displeasure that's grave.

Then he hume and he haws

And stricks placards about Half-explaining the cause

Of not kicking me out, Ev'ry rigmarole sentence succeeding

In plunging me deeper in doubt.

At one moment he states

I can leave when I please

And can sail at cheap rateà

To my home o'er the seas;

But the next I discover his promise

Is whittled away by degrees.

Weird Hindu Ceremony.

The Hindu Temple in Southbridge-rd.. Bingapore, was, on June 11, the scene of a weird ceremony known as the feast of Timiri, or fire-walking ceremony,

The ceremony is annually performed by the Pandavas, a Hindu soot who worship the Goddess Thurol. The story in Indian mythology is that Droupads was the con- mon queon of the five brother Kings known as the Pandavas, who reigned in ancient times at Hastinapura, now known as Delhi. The kings had a line of envious cousins known as the Diroabanas. The Dircabanas raised their war standard and In a big battle were beaten by the Pan- davas. They then turned to guile and in gamble with the Pandavas won their

I wish that I had read the article a long time ago. -I-had been afraid-that- Cheere had a tendency to produos indiges- tion and for that reason never touched it. Now. dom from them. The Pandavas were des- perate, and as a last stake placed Queen Droupada in the scale to win back their Kingdom. Again they lost, and after tak ing the Quoan the Diroabanas drove them from the Palaco. Then wish. lng to put great shame on the Queen of their enemies the Diro banas had her brought into the Throne Room and com- manded that she be stripped.

Queen Droupads was horrified at the dishonour about to be rut on her and supplicated the Goddess Tburoh to come to her aid, vowing that if the Goddess would intervene on her behalf she would walk over fire. The Goddess Thurob heard the prayer and when the followers of the Diroabenas began to remove Droupada's clothing the more they removed yet more was beneath. At length popular favour turned to Queen Droupada through this manifestation on her behalf by Thuroh and a rising which drove the Dirosbanas from the Kingdom was organised.

Droup.da then to redeem her vow hed a. bery carpet of coals "prepared and in full view of the populace walked over it. Henceforward she was worshipped as one of the seven Goddesses of Chastity and the fire walking ceremony by those who wished to become sinless became a yearly festival,

A number of the devotees, who fast throughout the day, garb themselve in yellow robes, and after other tasks walk over a bed of red-bot embers.

Not many of the European community of Singapore have any idea of the weird and terrible ceremonies which are

per formed by the fanatics of the various religions which side by side with Christianity hold place in Singapore, and that witnessed at the Southbridge-rd. Temple yesterday was perhaps one of the most peculiar forms of torture to which Asiatic fanatics canı put themselves to.

A visit to this Temple made one think not of matter-of-fact Singapore but of India, in the mediaeval times, for the spacious court-yard of the Temple was thronged with Hindus putting themselves to various forms of torture to expatiate their Only the khaki uniform of a Malay police constable here and there amongst the crowd, reminded one that the nựa was really the twentieth century.

Bing.

Among the forms of abasement to be seen were young and plump women prostrating themselves in the dust and sprinkling their bodies with dust, some in silence and some

to the accompaniment of appalling cries. A thin misarable-looking wretch essayed the task of rolling thrice round the temple court yard, piloted by a relative. At the end of the second round his eyes were starting from his head and his breath com- ing in gasps. The last round had to be accomplished with the help of his friend twisting him over and over by the legs.

An inspection of the temple was followed by a visit to the inner recess tensated by some dozen alcek comfortable-looking pri esta, who issue passes to the "scquirers of merit." These are delivered to another lot

of priests and the devotee is daubed with FOR VLADIVOSTOCK, VIA SHANG. saffron, a small amulet given him or her, and is led in front of another God and whipped on the wrists with a rope's end.

All this is the inita ion to the fire walking ceremony All day long firewood had boen kopt burning in an enclosure about eigh teen feet by six, and at o'clock there was a bed of glowing ashes giving out a quite uncomfortable degree of heat. The fire walkers had been away at the Outram-rd Temple and returned to the sound of gonge and drums. As they entered the gaten white goat that had been smeared with saffron was decapitated. The devotees had a way made for them through the crowd of onlookers and had worked themselves up into a frenzy. They tore and fought to be allowed to get to the fire, but the priesta held them back and only allowed them to walk across the burning fiery furnace ope at a time. As each one's turn came be rushed through with a howl, and then danced madly in front of the Goddess Thuroh, where they wore again scourged by two burly looking priests.

Some of them walked calmly enough across the belt of fire; one fell on his face, to be ignominiously hauled out and cast into a tank of water. Neither man nor woman showed any signs of suffering, and one mother with her child walked smiling through the cinders. When all had cros sed, the "holy ones grasped the embors in their bands and besprinkled their heads with them. The fire was then put out, and the crowd gradually dispersed.

11

The firewalking ceremony is performed in Province Wellesley on a larger scale than elsewhere in this part of the world. There instead of crossing embers the devotees walk through fire, and on one occasion a woman accidentally dropped her infant into the fire and the unfortunate child was burned to death.-Singapore Free Press
