FIREBALL IN A CHURCH.
Steeple Split in Two,^
As the congregation at Wookey Church, near Wells, on May 13, were singing the hymn, **Ob, what the joy and the glory must be," a fireball split the steeple in two and passed through the roof. Explosions followed in the church, and the congrega tion, panic-stricken, rushed to the doors, Several persons were slightly Injured, and fa response to an appeal by the vicar the congregation afterwards returned and offered special prayers for their marvellous свсаре.
There was no lightning conductor to the tower, which
tric dischia 90ft, high, and the elec
first struck the weather cook. Several gaping holes were made in the roof by the falling of blocks of freestone. Within the belfry the wire which connected the clock with the big bell was fused, and the reservoir of the paraffin lamp in the ringing loft was pierced, and the oil apread about the floor.
A ball of fire travelled diagonally across- the church. The smell of sulphur was in- tense, and asveral ladies among the congre-- gation fainted.
One lady states that she saw several small' balls of fire playing "quite close to her, and a male member of the congrogation saw a ball of fire, after traversing the church, disapper through the south door. Three persons had their legs burnt.
The service concluded, without a sermon, the congregation retiring after offering up

An Historian's Views.
The London Spectator has always up- posed the idea of salaried members of Parliament. Goldwin Smith, the Canadian' historian, expresses his agreement with The Spectator's view, and thus controverts the Prime Minister'e argument based on the practise of the colonies:
est
"I have all my life votek for the Labor candidate when a good ono presented him- self, and cheerfully contributed to his election fund, dooming it in the inter- of the whole community that labor should be directly represented I in the council of the nation. heartily welcome the Labor vote for the reduction of armamonte. But I confora that what I have soon on this side of the Atlantic leads me to share your misgivings. about anything which can give publiù life more of the character of a trade. The Parliament of Great Britain would surely lose dignity by the change. Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman, I venture to think, when he points to the colonies for a justi. fication of the measure, hardly takes, into- account, at least an får as Canada `is con- cerned, the difference in social structure be tween Geat Britain and a colony. We have here no such class of independent men of means as that which hitherto has ligely filled your House of Commons. The leaders- of our commercs can not afford to leave their business for Parliament; or if they do, it is apt to be in the interest of their: business rather than in that of the com munity at large. We thus find it necessary to pay for the labor of representation. am sorry to add that, while Sir Henry Campbell Bannerman, if he wants an example of a worthy people, can not do

PURITY. Its source is amid hard volcanic rock, beyond reach of contsot, with any human being, and it is conveyed by gravity through■ rock-hewn tunnel and concrete aqueduct to a sheltered enclosure, whore, without pumping, bailing, or touch of human hand, it is placed by machinery in sterilized bottles and packed in cases for shipment; thus, from its initial source protecting the water against possible taint of any kind, Percolating through several strata of virgin rook, it is saturated with their unsullied-mineral properties, and na. chemical skill can duplicate the living Tanaan any more then the laboratory. can evolve a living tree.
FLAVOR. Tansan gladdens the palate with a cost peculiar to itself, clean, crisp, novel, and delicious. Its appetizing taate amacks of satisfaction, without savor of a feeling of fulness, however freely indulged Lo.
TANSAN is Nature's own distillation, and because of its absolute purity it blende with spirits, wines, atout, milk, and other Liquors without altering the natural flavor, except to unfold it.
STIMULUS. Tanoan is refreshful, and, by reason of its native qualities, it excites the appetite and stiniulates the outritive functions. It is persistently regulative without being laxative, and it eliminates from the problem of life the ailments attributable to the liver and kidneys.
The supply is inexhaustible, being D even flow, entirely independent of surface conditions of a wet or dry season, and there will never be necessity nor excuse for the artificial manufacture of Tansan, so that it will be forever free from the obnoxious taste peculiar to all saltod and fabricated waters. Visitor to the Spring find the entire plant open to inspection-there is nothing to conceal,

NO SENSE OF HUMOR.
An old Georgia darky owned a small and ancient mule, but which, at a casual ques- tion as to the price at which it was held, became suddenly endowed with all the virtues of the best blood of Kentucky.
"But lie is at least 20 years old, uncle," the would-be purchaser protested.
"Dat mule ?" Unole Moso said, indig nantly. No, sah! Ef dat 'mulo's mo' 'an six years ole, Ah hopes he dies fo' 'mawnin' !",
Upon visiting his stable the next day, Uncle Mose was struck with consternation to find his animal stretched lifeless on the ground.
"Look at dat, now !" he oxclaimed; with intense disgust, "What you think o' dat? Nevor did see sich er fool mule-couldn't eben take er lil' joke lack dat !"

It says Japan is deliberately preparing for another war with Chins, the sole, or at any rate the main, object being money to collect from her neighbour" the #hich she expected but failed to obtain from Russia. There will be no question whatever," writes the Yokohama journal, about the rights or wrongs of the case. Japan must have money, much money, many hundred millions of money, and a war with Chins, that would not only pay for itself, but which would also pay off the prosent crashing war debt and make all China the treasury of Japan, would be popular from one end of the country to the other.' It is a lie, pure and simple, and we need not refute it. We can not, however, over- look the maliciousness of the writer. ANOTHER PErmanent ÜürE IN PHRAE,
MB LAN LOOKING or Kampar wiTH BIS WIFE AND CHILDREN. (From a Photograph),
TR Lam-Looking is a prominent tin-mine owner in the State of Perak, Foderated
MR Ro is to Straits-born Chinese, well-educated, progressive, a man of mash influence and of high standing in the mining town of Kampar where he lives.
About three years ago,' said Mr Lam Looking, My wife was suffering greatly from Headaches. These Headaches came on every month. They used to last for days and during the attacks sho seemed quite dazed, in fact was in a semi-conscious condition for hours. At these times, too, her tongue became thickly fúrred, her breath was offensive, and there were other symptoms usual in such cases. European and Native medicines were tried during and between the attacks, but very little good resulted.
'One day I received a pamphlet about Dr W lliams' Pink Pills for Pale People. In it I read that these Pilla are good for women; so I bought a x bottles of the Pills for my wife. After she had taken four bottles thero as a marked change for the better in kor condition, her appetite returned, she slept well, hor tongue was a healthier colour, the unpleasant odour disappeared from the breath, and in course of time the headachos entirely ceased. She suffers no more from them now and has regular health. At the time my wife was using Dr Williams' Pink Pillo she was taking no other medicine, so I am more that it was Pills and the Pills alone-that cured hor. So great is my faith in Dr Williams' Pink Pilla now that I have given some of them to each of my two childron, and have also used them myself. Whenever my appetite is bad I take the Pills and they set things right.
Hundreds of thousands of ladies the world over are never without Dr Williams' Pink Pills for Pale People, because they know from experience how particularly valu. able to women, especially those between youth and middle life those pills are. Mon and children too are constantly being benefitted by Dr Williams' Pink Pills. Testimony proves them to be the great remedy for Liver Complaint, Bile, Headaches, Indigestion, disordered Kidneys, Rheumatism, Paralysis, Berl-beri, Skin Diseases, Boils and Pimples, and the after effects of Fevers, Dysentery, and Chills. Men broken down by overwork or residence in unhealthy climates are speadily restored by their use. They can be obtained at most shops where medicines are sold and also direct from the Dr Williams' Medicine Co., Singapore, 6 bottles for 88/- or 1 bottle for $1.50 post free.

THE A ATHUE CHAMPIONSHIP. Late advices from Home show that the Amateur Golf Championship was won by by Mr Robb, who defeated Mr Lingen by 4 up and 3 to play. Last year it will be ro- membered the champion was Mr A. Barry, of Cambridge University, who defeated the Hon. Osmund Scott by 3 up and 2 to play. The Royal and Ancient have re- cently had a suggestion before them that the number of championship links should be increased; but they rejected it with the anticipated scorn. The present cham- planship links are the Royal and Ancient, Honourable Company, Prestwick, Royal St. George, and Royal Liverpool, but there are other accessible and popular courses which have a claim to be selected as the venue once in a while.
