him. He was then allowed to go back to his cell. In the morning he asked for a doctor, and was informed that he needed none. His guard was told that he could best him as he liked, but not in the face. He was ordered to stand in the middle of the room, and, being too weak to do so, he was beaten time after time with a rifle.
The next day an official asked if he be- lieved in God. On demanding the reason for this question, he was beaten for lack of respect. In the middle of the night he would be awakened as he slept on the floor by a hick, and would be asked politely, "Are you sleeping?" Two planke, were pointed out to him, and he was ordered not pontes on any other part of the floor.
When he asked for water the reply was, Food "Such a dog does not want water." was only given him once a day. From other cells he heard screams of agony.

SUPPLANTING STEAM:
Invention to Abolish Use of Coal,“
Arrangements are now being made in England to test a new type of engine, which, if it prove successful, may cause a greater industrial revolution than that which resulted from the discovery of the steam engine or the application of elec- tricity to motive power.
The patentee is Mr Thomas Marsden, of" Wigan, Lancashire, who has already achieved some яuccosu na an inventor. This new production he describes as a triply.cconomic air ongine.
If Mr Marsden can justify all his claims, the business of the collier will be practi- cally gone as far as industrial requirements are concerned. There will be no need to discuss the vexed question of the exhaustion of our coal supplies, und'it will not be a mitter of vital importance whether Welsh or New Zealand coal is best adapted for the purposes of the Navy.
Bummarised. Mr Marsdens' claims for his new engine are as follow:-
1. The economicair engine will save the
use of coal and all cost of fuel.
2. It will take the place of steam, which
will not be required to keep the pressure
of air constant.
It will drive the locomotive, propel the steamship, work the mill, the forge, etc., without using either gas, water, coal, electricity, or oil.
4. It will entirely prevent smoke.
B. The economic oylinder will be more powerful than any other type of cylinder of equal diameter.
6.--It will save the use of large boilers,
and not more than two will be required for
•
large works,
7. With two or more boilers Glled with
sompressed air up to the pressure required
in each boilers, the economic cylinder will keep up the pressure of air If set to work.
8. It will put more sig Into the boiler than it takes out of it.
9. In locomotives and other high pressure s'eam boilers wear and tear is considerable, caused by fires and the use of dirty water, and constant changing of temperature and pressure, all having a tendency to pull them to pleces and cause serious renta round rivet holes and other parts of the boilers. This wear and tear will be avoided by the use of the air engine.
Mr. Marsden informed a press represen. tative that the economia cylinder, when the boilera in conjunction with it are once charged, will work perpetually if requ without a farthing cost for fuel.
"Fill the receiving boiler once with a hand pump, or any other means," he said, "and it will last for ever, providing there is Do leakage.
1
'The compressed air will do its work in the economic cylinder and then pass as exhaust into another, which is also con Dected with the feeding boiler.

TANSAN'SAVOY, 13, QUEEN'S ROAD CENTRAL
PURE, Exquisite in Flavor, Stimula- ting without Reaction, this life-giving, Natural Mineral Water gushes out of the mountain-side at Takaradzka, near Kobe, Japath
PURITY. Its source is amid hard volcanic rock, beyond reach of contact with any human being, and it is conveyed by gravity through a rock-hewn tunnel and concrete aqueduct to a sheltered enolosáre, where, without pumping. bailing, or touch of human hand, it is placed by machinery in sterilized bottles and packed in cases for shipment; thus, from its initial Bource protecting the water against possible taint of any kind. Percolating through several strata of virgin rook, it is saturated with their unsullied-mineral properties, and no chemical skill can duplloste the living Tankan any more then the laboratory can
volve a living tree.
FLAVOR. Tansan gladdens the palate with a zest peculiar to itself, clean, crisp, novel, and delicious. Its appetizing taste smacks of satisfaction, without savor of a feeling of fulness, however freely indulged ta.
TANSAN is Nature's own distillation, and hecause of its absolute purity It blende with spirits, wines, atout, milk, and other liquors without altering the natural favor, Bxcept to unfold it.
STIMULUS, Tansan is refreshful, and, by reason of its native qualition, it excites the appetite and stimulates the nutritive functions. It is persistently regulative without being laxative, and it eliminates from the problem of life the to the liver and Ailments attributable kidneys,
The supply is inexhaustible, being au even dow, entirely independent of surface conditions of a wet or dry season, and there will never be necessity nor excuse for the artificial manufacture of Tansan. so that it will be forever free from the obnoxious taste peculiar to altod and fabricated waters. Mr Hewett-I don't quite understand the use of establishing a committee like this. It appears to me that if some dispute, arose between an inspector and an owner of property the M. . H. or other officer could check what the inspector had done and if matters were then unsatisfactory the owner of the property could refer the matter to the Board to be dealt with on its merits.
The President-That is exactly my view, but the Board does not see eye to eye with me in this matter. There is an officer of the Sanitary Department who devotes the whole of his time to lime-washing, and a suggestion has been put forward that a committee should be appointed to devote ita time to the work, and that the inspector should do other work. Personally, I think the suggestion a foolish one, and I think was brought about because it emanated from an officer who does not supervise the detail work of the outside department. I did not my point. The district inspectors attend wish to speak of it at all. Mr Hewett seca to some of the lime-washing and what could not be done I y them was done by Inspector Witchell. Inspector Witchell has now gone on leave, so the whole thing ends in smoke. If there are any gentlemen on the Board who would like to serve on this committee and spend six or eight hours per day, Sun- Witchell devoted the whole of his time, six cally. or eight hours a day, to certain work, and it has been suggested by one of the officers of the Board that a committee should attend to that work. morning and others exercising in the after: BROCKLEBANK LINE TO THE FAR noon it is difficult to get a correct idea of the form displayed. I am afraid I have not been such a regular attendant of late and have therefore missed several interesting gallops. The Committee I observe have on this occasion decided to commence with the 1 mile handicap, which this season has been the final race of the previous meetings. The order has doubtless been changed to enable handicap ponies to have a chance of starting in the Hurdle race, and if such is the case the opportunity has been availed of, for seven ponies have entered for the jumps. I hope this race will prove more interesting and exciting than the last, for it was certainly very tamo from a spectator's point of view.
It is difficult to pick the starters for the first race, but after looking over the programme I fancy the following are probables-Preston, Mamodeen, Highland Gillie, Maori King and The Quaich. As a likely winner I should name the first mentioned with Highland Gillie second and Maori King or The Quaich third. Both the last-named appear to be moving rather stify but judging by the care and patience the sporting owner of Maori King is bestowing on his favourite it will be strange indeed if he does not bring him to the post as" fit as a fiddle." My idea as to the outcome of the race may alter consider. ably after seeing the weights which the handicappers decido on.
The second race of the day-Lemon Cutting-should prove very interesting. I am glad to see that several gentlemen are devoting a little time to practice.

FROM KOBE AND YOKOBAMA.
HE Company's Steamship Gackuar, Thaving arrived,
There should be n very good field for the Challenge Cup. I learn on good Blue Nile, HOW the authority that property of Mr Master, will be unable to start on this occasion, baving unfor- tunately thrown out a splint. The pony was looking well, and would, I think, have started a popular favourite. Tho race now lies between Kingston, Pathan the hazardous and/or cxtra hazardous and Highland Raider, unless The Quaich Godowns of the HONGKONG AND Kow-
pony.
are hereby informed that their Goode are being landed at their fisk, into
Optional Cargo will be discharged here, unless notice to the contrary be given im- mediately.
LOON WHARF AND GODOWN CO., LIMITED, starts, when I should name him in pre-whence delivery may be obtained. With a ference to Mr Macdonald's flying course T expect to see a desperate finish between Kingston and Pathan. Mr Clarke's monnt will have a big advantage in weight, but I think what he gains there he loses in quality. Given a wet day I should name Kingston, The Quaich and Pathan to fill the places in the order
mentioned.
The Ladies Nomination race will again
doubtless afford a certain amount of am-
usement for those interested in "Bimble Pappy" events.
The Sub-Griffins' race should bring out a field of five. To me Red Herring seems unquestionably the 'best pony, but rumour has it that he is at the moment out of sorts. He has been doing a lot of swim. ming exercise I am told, which no doubt harite advantages. Next on list I should place Lashmere, but the wily owner gives but few opportunities of seeing his paces. In my opinion Roscommon is going off and I think he would be the better for a rest.
The Hurdle race will wind up the pro- gramme and I will not vonture an opinion as I have only seen two of the ponies gallop.
