best work was done in the Sudan, but it was not until the conflict in South Africa that the great strain.. of a modern war fell upon the nursing stall. Miss Browne, was early at the front, and she had charge of two goneral hospitals. Her personal skill and efficient supervision were great factors in the hospital work, and Miss Browne is gratefully remembered to-day by mapy soldiers. After service at various stations, she reorganised the nursing service from hor final post at the War Office, and the Queen appointed her the first Matron-in- Chief of the reformed service, which now bears her Majesty's name.

The King conferred upon Miss Browne the Order of the Royal Red Cross and her medals, with clasps, are five in number. Miss Browne is a member of the Army Medical Advisory Board. Miss C. H. Kerr, R. R. C., has succeeded her is

THE PROPOSED SKIELD, Mr M. B. Northcote, the secretary of the
Local Volunteer Rifle Club, has received suggestions from the secretary of the Singa- pore Rifle Association relative to the pro- posed trophy for the rifle competitiona between Hongkong, hanghai, Singapore and Penang: It is suggested that the trophy shall take the form of a silver chal- lenge vase mounted on an ebony plinth capable of accommodating 30 silver shields, on which will be engraven the winning port, score und names of the winning team. The Secretary of the Eingapore Association has also forwarded a number of rules which are suggested to govern the holding of the trophy.
Sportamen in the Colony so far have not shown any great desire to aid this move- ment financially. Bongkung is required to find $500, the amount which each of the other ports interested is going to raise, but up to date wo have only 855 to peknow- Ledge, as follow:

Another attempt is now being made to have the Tennis Tournaments promoted by the Hongkong Cricket Club, concluded. The recent wet weather had delayed the games considerably, but it is hoped that by Saturday next the last of the finals wil have been played, Yesterday afternoon
two matches were decided, one being the Boal of the Professional Pairs, the other. being in the Earth round of the Double Handicap
In the Professional Fairs final Messrs Hancock and Zehrmann (Merchants) were opposed to Messrs B yd and MacPherson (Banking). From the date on which the Merchants defeated Mesars Norris and Fincingy they were installed favourites and they justified their solection by winning three sets to love against the Bankers, the scores being 6-3, 6-2, 6-2. Messrs Hancock and Zuhrinaon played consistently throug bout and deserved their win.
In the Doubles Handicap Mes ra J. L McPherson and Ru ledge were opposed to Messrs Woodward and Lieutenant Whyto and won. There is still another match in the Fourth round of this tournamens to be play. ed beforetha semi-final are reached, between Moers Phelips and Zehrmand and Captain Carpenter and R. Macpherson. This game was commenced on Thurday last but owing to the greasy nature of the ground, con- sequent upon the heavy rain, Mr Phelips fell and injured his knee. The match was therefore declared off and is to ba The winners will moct replayed to day Mosers underson and Pearce in the semi- final. The other semi-final, between Mesar Knyvett and Norrie and Messrs McPherson and Rutledge is to be played to-day,
The final of the Championship between T. B. Norrie and R. F. O. Master will be played on Saturday next.
The final of the Single Handicap (A. Class) is set down for to-day, as also is the final of the Single Handicap (B. Class).
THE PROFESSIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP, A match for £500 and the world's tonnin
championship, between "Punch" Fairs, the holder, and Ferdinand Garcin, French champion, took place at Prince's Club, Brighton, in April. Up to the third day each man had won four sets, but on the final day Fairs, simply outplayed his opponent, and, winning three successive sota with the greatest case, won the cham- pionship by seven sets to four.
The Englishman was superior at all points, and kept Garcin on the defensive throughout. He found the winning open- Ings in deadly fashion, returned almost everything sent to him, and served consia- tently well
