ADVENTURE.

The story of the adventure of Lieuten ant Axell, of the Swedish Hussars, Stock- holm, in a rácé (train Zretürölng) from

Kempton Park was told at. "Newington

sessions last month. Two well-dressed '. young men named Thompson and Lawton- were indicted for obtaining £20 by alleged false pretences from the prosecutor, and with attempting to obtain further sum of £10.

Lieutenant Axell, who spoke English exceedingly well, described how he lost his money in trying to pick out the "Indy' from four cards.

17

Mf Elliott (for Lawton): Twigging the “lady "andle? Buy UVA

Lieutenant Axell: Lawton played and lost his money, and I thought he had lost it very stupidly (laughter).

What happened when you played?— Why, I lost, of course. I lost £20, and I was asked to play for value, but I didn't want to lose my watch. Lawton offered to lend me £10.

Did you lose that, too?-Yos, first time. Have you been in London long ?--No, 1376 aluthECCO z

What did you come here for ?—To learn English

I can compliment you upon the quickness with which you have acquired it."You are fairly well up in racing matters T-I am.

You can tell us how often the King won the Derby Yes.

Let me see if you can. Is it twice ?- Yes.

Continuing Lieutenant Axell said that one of the players winked at him (while Lawton was losing, and turned up the edge of the "lady." It was this winking that led him on to play. He chose the card with the turned-up edge, but it was not the "lady." Mr Elliott: Was it not the quickness of the sleight of hand on one side and your sight on the other?--I think there must have been a bit of conjuring (laughter).

Evidence was given that after their arrival in London, Lawton sent a messenger 1797 boy to Lieutenant Axell, at the Royal Palace Hotel asking for the £10 he had tent him. In the meantime the police had been informed, and the boy' was followed by detectives. After seeing Lieutenant. Axell, he was met by Thompson, whió was thereupon arrested. Thompson declared he knew nothing about the matter, and was gave evidence on oath, and said that This real name was James Lawrence, and he

THE AGONY OF PILES.

BILE BEANS PROVE A BLESSING.

suffer from bleeding piles is torture

Tindrecriable. Yet there are thou

Bande enduring its terrible torture, to-day

who are unaware of the existence of such a valuable and absolute cure as Bile Beans. The following account of how a miner was completely rid of bleeding piles by this medicine is but one of many such being daily received by the proprietors of Bile Beans, from grateful sufferora. Describing her husband's suffering, Mrs Tom Metcalfe, wife of a miner at Wingate Colliery, Dur- ham, England, says:-

As a consequence of working in wot seatis, my husband was for many years a terrible sufferer from bleeding pileg. Bis condition at length got so bad that he had, to give up work; and for eleven months he was unable to do a stroke. His agony was at times awful, and he could not sit, stand, nor lie down. The only way he could gat a little ease was by going down on his knees before the fire. A doctor who at tended him said an operation was the only thing to cure him. We got him many different kind of medicines, but they did him, no good.

'One day I was reading about a Bila Bean cure, and I thought I would buy a bottle for my husband. I did so, and he began taking them, although I don't think he was very hopeful of obtaining relief However, he felt so much better after the first bottle that he continued with the treate inent. Soon he was able to get about without pain. The improvement continued, and he was eventually quite cured. I am always willing to testify that Bile Beans are without an equal for piles; we are never without a bottle in the house.

Thousands of cases could be quoted similar to the above. In many instances, piles result from constipation; which in turn, arises from defective liver action. Bile Beans stimulate and correct the liver, and thus remove the real cause of the ail- ments. They are also a cure for indi gestion, biliousness, anemis, all female Bile ailmente, debility, and headache, Besna are obtainable from all chemists and

medicine vendors. Price 75 cents (Mex.) per bottle.

TRANSLATIONS IN COURT.

Challenging the Translator,

When the Supreme Court was opened this morning His Lordship the Chief Justice laid down a ruling with respect to transla- tions put into Court and certified to by the Court Translator. attention of the Board to the extremely unsatisfactory way in which the recent painting of the Central Market has been carried out. In the butchers' shop the paint is so sticky, although three weeks old, that canvas has had to be hung over the paint to prevent it being pulled off by the carciees hung against it. Such canvas id undesirable and I have had to order its removal. In the first section almost all the

́THE PERJURY CASE.

Appeal to the Privy Council.

In the Appellate Forfidiction of the Full Court this morning before His Lordship Sir Francis Piggott (Chief Justice) and His Honour Mr A. G. Wise (Puisne Judge) an application for leave to appeal to the Privy Council was made in respect to the seven Chinese merchants who were sentenced to three months' imprisonment for perjury.

Mr Sholton Hooper presumes that such work has to be passed by the Public Works Department before payment is made.

Hon. Mr Hewett minuted that the market being a Government building he presumed the work of painting it was arranged for by some Government official, supposedly the P.W,D. If any complaint as to the unsatisfactory carrying out of the work was made Me Howett thought it should be made to the Government department in question in the first instance,

Mr Lau Chu Pak suggested: Why not serve, a notice at once. In private cases this course would have been followed with out reference to the Board.

The Director of Public Works does not attempt to conceal his indignation at the course adopted by Dr Pearse, for he min- atas as follows:-It was surely the duty of

9.-If your Committee consider there be cause for alarm, doubtless they will move the Government to legislate in the matter, and now that the Government's profit on subsidiary coins is endangered (for if there be no demand there will be no further coinage, and consequently no further profit) perhaps their former reason for a policy for non-interference will no longer weigh and there may yet be time to frustrate the evil in its incipient stage:
