THE SHIP STREET CASE,

The case in which Hermian Gotschee, second officer of the steamer "Lycemoon," was recently sentenced to a month's im- prisonment on a charge of luving assaulted police constable Taylor at Ship Street was again before Mr F. This morning Mr Dixon renewed his application. He said that his former application was made under Section 96 of the Magistrate's Ordinanco which gave the Magistrate power to review his decision or grant a re-hearing upon an application made within seven clear days of the date of his decision, upon such grounds as he might deem sufficient. He now renewed his application under section 103 of the "Tell you what, Tankerville," vociferated same Ordinance which set out that any the humourist, "You' re simply suffering person who felt aggrieved, or desired to from double Bridge-itis. sentence of fourteen years' penal servi tude; then, year after, a small, bird-like figure, seed through a pep hole, in the hideous costume of the broad arrow, scrub- bing for dear life his coll at Portland; and to-day, when after a two daya''search by motor I found somewhere many miles from London a small old gentleman at a table- Burrounded by masses and masses of MSS. and newspapers, a figuro that, frankly, I should not have recognised anywhere.
"Iam practically penniless," said Mr Balfour; "my children have pawned their all in self-support. I must earn bread and a home. These statements that I have a concealed fortune will prevent my doing so. Deny them, I beg."
"
The man is as one returned from the grave. The world has moved amazingly in his twelve yeard of absencos A drive! through London was a revelation to him. He had not seen a woman, gaye as a visitor through a prison grille, for years and ydırak 14 Hán tall they Are nowadays ì. and how packed the streets are. But I am a Rip Van Winkle. I fool lost in the world,"
"You have youre plans, Mr. Balfour?" "I have; but first let me tell a little of my story; not much, for I must in justice to myself resolve indoed of it for any book my only present means of earning anything more than mero bread. Up tll two years ago I did not think that I should pull through. The prison was killing me - not that I was unkindly used. But the sorrow and degradation of it all were breaking my spirit.
"For the last year my future life has given me rauch thought I have to face the world and my victims, or, as I maintain, the victims of circumstance who, had my properties then realised the value they have since achieved, would have been spared their lo8508.
"I suffered with my victims, and as much as any of them. I have been grieved to the heart at their sufferings. You say that you saw me take my sentence unmoved. The outer man does not always betray the workings of the soul. Let me say plainly
that I shall face the music. Meanwhile I ~hall devote myself to my book."
My mind is irrevocably made up. Dur- ing my thousands of days' imprisonment I have reconsidered the whole businees in all its aspects, both with regard to the transa tions themselve and as to what would be becoming for me to say with regard to them In the political and financial por- tion of my book I shall devote some chapters to the Liberator group, and to the circumstances which led to the disaster, of which the Press and the public as yet know nothing. For twelve years my enemies have had their say.
Unless provoked I do not wish in these first few days of liberty and on the very threshold of my new career, to re-opth wounds which have been closed during hese long years, but which will never be healed. Were I to do so I should have in common justice to myself and others to. reflect on colleagues and business connec tions, some of whom have since died, and adme are strangely and miraculously pros. perous:
While in prison Mr. Balfour has been engaged in the following tasks :-Mail bag seving, shoemaking, and in the tinsmiths' shop at Portland. Since his removal to Parkhurat ho worked in the tailors' shop, the printers' shop, and for the last eighteen months had the very heavy and responsible manual work of delivering the books in the priơn library to some 800. readers.--Oon· · sens Daily Mail.

Lawn Tennis.
The unfavourable weather we have ex- perienced for the past couple of days, has effectively put a stop to the Lawn Tennis Tournaments of the Hongkong Oricket Din an effort was made by to, despite the raid, an effort was made by four players to get the match in the fourth round of the Doubles Handicap, finished. Unfortunately one of them, Mr H. R. Phelips, slipped on the wet sward and injured his knee, thus patting an end to the match. It is rather A pity that the rain commenced before the tournaments were finished as they are now very late, and the cricket ground needs a rest if it is to be in anything like good order for the cricket season. That, o' course, is a long way off yet, but the ground is in a very poor state and will take con Aiderable time to recuperate.
According to indications the Lawn Tennis Season at Home promises to be a record one, both in regard to the number of open tournaments and in the public interest which the chief matches are likely to arouse. "Once again (says a Home journal) this country is to be invaded by the picked teams of foreign nations, who will wage battle against each other for the right to challenge England for possession of the

The prosent American champion, Reale To-day's Advertisements
Wright, wh, to the surprise of many, was not deputed last year to play against Eng. land in the singles, is certainly one of the finest exponents ever brod in the Republic. He has considerably strengthened his play since his last visit, and must now be regarded as a champion quite likely to lower the colours of the younger Doherty. "Holcombe Ward will also come over again as Wright's partner in the doubles, while Alexander will probably act as second A combination like string in the singles.
this, with youth, vigour, and physical fitness on its side, will undoubtedly prove most formidable, especially as the elder Doherty may find that bis health will not allow him to partner his brother in the Roubles.
The second round of the Davis Cup com- petition, the antagonists presumably being America and Australasia, will be contested at Newport (Mon). Wales will thus have another opportunity of welcoming foreign champions, though she herself will not be participating in the matches.
The splendid form exhibited by A. F. Wilding on the Riviera this spring certainly points to the probability of his selections for a place in the Australasian team, and if Norman Brookes comes over again, as is anticipated, the Colonials will present a very strong front. There is no reason why Brookes and Wilding should not pair up for the doubles. Both have fine services and are punishing volleyers. In practice matches at Thorpe Batchville late last summer they proved a most powerful couple. At any rate, with other stalwarts coming from Australia, the Colonial team the whole is certain to make America
way.
BO
A GOOD SUGGESTION," FR C. B. Wainright of Lemon City,

That when taken in this way the effect is double in rapidity. "It seems to get at the right spot instantly, he says. For sale by all chemists and storekeepers.
