NOTICE.
THE TRUSTEES of BELILIOS FUND 13,555, awarded the following Prizes in respect of the Examinations held under the Trust in April last :-
The result of the election was that M. Louis Hemique, was re-elected for the third t 'me with 18,652 votes, »gainst 13,663 For M. Lemaire and 5 for M. Cempo.
The Madras Mail, commenting on the Pondicherry election riots, says its Indi- cherry correspondent has given some interesting details lately regarding the cleotion of a Deputy Tor French India and it was clear from what he said that the voting would be pretty close. So it was apparently, for M: Lemaire, ex-Governor, who came out to ludia especially to contest the seat, ublained
as many as votes, against 18,652 voten obtained by M. L. Henrique, who is now elected for the third time. Considering the former unchallonged preponderance of M. Hen. rique's party, M. Lemsire's performance is sufficiently remarkable and indicates that there is a numerous and powerful minority dissatisfied with the previously existing state of affair. M. Henriquo is a popular candidato relying on the native vote, the. local loader of the party being M. Shun. mugani Moudelliar. The influence of the French Deputy is such that he can make or unmake Colonial Governors by bringing pressure to bear on the Ministry in Paris, so that the position is one of considerable importance and the struggle of the party to have Deputy of its own way of thinking is necessarily soute.
