THRILLING TRIP IN A CASCO.

Blown Across the China Šea,

A thrilling tale of the sea is told' by Eulogio de los Santos, one of the ten casco hands that manned casco number 2106, on her hurricane driven passage across the --China sea to Saigon,

The crew of the casco have now returned to Manila leaving on the day following the receipt of the news from Saigon that all were safe,

:

The casco, which is the property of -General Miguel Malvar, of insurrectionary fame, was beating her path over Manila Bay towards Marivoles, on March 18, when a storm broke, and turning her ruthlessly in the trough of its wash; and baffling the best efforts of the men with the poles and paddles to give the craft way on a safe luff handwards, and sweeping abaft her poop, the waves drove her dead through the channel and out to sea, whilst the tem pestuous winds tore all the loose truck over thenipa housing and swept all loose bamper overboard.

She was laden with rica and wood, which fortunately provided sufficient ballast to keep her from turning turtle, through tho stress of wave and wind, and after seeing that their efforts to navigate the craft were fruitless, the patron and his hands aban- doned all work against the elements and threw themselves down below, lashing themselves to the vessel to escape being washed overboard, and abandoned them. selves to providence and fate. They spent 36 Hours of nameless anguish offering prayers to the Almighty to save them from a watery grave and thinking of their loved onea at the town of Bitin, on the. chores of Laguna de Bay,

Then the storm conhed as abruptly as it had begun and the men went up above to find themselves alone at sea no land in sight. The patron dealt out the portions of rice and scarce hoping to ever see terra firma again, the mon took to the paddles, rigged up a sort of mast and lot providence, in default of compass, direct the craft. 13 days were passed in this way and then the chow gave out. There was still no sign of land and the men abandoned hope and Isid themselves down to die.

For four days they drifted at the mercy of the current until one morning they were washed up near Saigon. A steamer leaving that port for Bankok furnished the half famished crew with the first nourishment they had partaken of for many days and the men 'ate ravonously. They were after- wards taken care of by the French anthori- ties at Saigon, and returned to Manila on the steamer Magallanes.'

The men left for their homes in Laguna province yesterday.

J

The alarm sent out by the customs authorities on the day following the dinsp pearance of the casco has been cancelled. Cablenetes.

There were 32 fires and 77 incipient fires during 1905, as against 57 and 64 re- spectively in 1904, says the report of the Superintendent of the Fire Brigade, which is published in the Government Gazette Tire report on the Government fire engines, indicates to what a condition the Fire Department in Hongkong has descended. Land engine No. 2 deserves pensioning. It has seen 27 years of service! The land engine, No. 4, has seen 23 years; land engine No. 4, 24 years; and land engine

engine is the fire-float and that has been in use for eight years. Absolutely nothing is modern in the true sense of the word, and it is to be hoped that Mr Halifax, while he is at Home, will speedily send in his report as to what system it is advisable for this Colony to adopt. With the water difficulty so pressing at times it is essential that to as grant an extent as possible sta water should be availed of, but under the existing circumstances if an outbreak of fire occurs at any distance from the Praya, it is almost certain demolition for the house burning and the adjoining houses are in great danger.

SPORTING.

The Olympic Games,

}

Home papers now arriving devote con- alderable space to the Olympic Games which commenced at Athens last month, It is ten years since these International sports took place, and prior to the here was an interval of fifteen hundred years. The revival of this ancient gathering has produced the greatest interest and enthu

aem, even royalty, in the persons of Their Majesties the King and Queen of England, being present at the opening ceremony. where 900 athletes marched in sclemn

procession round the horseshoe-shaped track. As far as we can gloan from

the cabled results which have been sent out, the Americans, as at the previous Deeting, have carried away the majority of the prizes, being credited with winning eleven events, against Britain's four and the Greck's three..

Great Britain opened well by winning the fencing competition, the team including Lord Desborough, Mr Newton' Robinson and Mr Seligman. Then the mile swimming race fell to Taylor, an Englishman, who apparently comes under the category of a dark horso," for in the notes published prior to the sporta name does not appear, while that of T 11. Derbyshire and T. A. Jarvis (England's best swimmers) figure conspicuously. allowing on Great Britain, through her Chadian representative, Herring, won the blue ribbon of the meeting-the Marathon Rico Swanberg, whose nationality we are unable to give, was second; and W. Frank, member of the Irish American Athletic Club and one of America's representatives, was third.

The Marathon race is the most import- ant event of the meeting and is the race that is desrest to the Greeks; the event which they were especially keen on winning this year, as they have in the previous contests.

From Marathon to Athens is about twenty seven miles, and the race is run along the public road. The competitora start from the tomb of the ancient Greeks who fell against the Per siang in the Battle of Marathon, and finish at the entrance to the Stadium at Athens. Their course lies through the fur plain of Attica, over the fairly regular road, and the nature of the race demands a natural hardihood rather than the comparatively form" produced by training. Brl fci+1 This is where the Greek mountaineer has the advantage. In the last contest, of the total competitors who started from Mara- then only five finished. These five were all Greeks, and the winner did the distance

Churchill, the famous Cambridge long-distance champion, Mr H. J. Weber, of the same university, and Mr S. Carnelly, from Oxford."

Herring won in 2 hours 57 mins. Among those who were specially fancied to provide a good battle for this event were:-J. J. Daly, Irish Cross County Champion; M. Raguenean, French Cham pion; and Zalacostas, the Greek Champion. How even the best of judges may err is illustrated by the result of the race; none

of those mentioned obtaining even a place. Another event to fall to England's lot was the pigeon shooting, which was won by Mr Merlin, a gentlemen, like Taylor, not mentioned in the "betting."

The javelin throwing was won by Swedish representatives the weight lifting by Greeks and the football competition by Danes, Greeks and Smyrniotes being the only other competitora. With the exploits of the All-Blacks". still fresh in our minds, it is with a feeling of regret that we note their absence from this stena of sport. So far we are entirely in the dark as to what events have been won by America, but the full results of the meeting will abortly be available.
