у

The Terrors of the Eruption.

NAZ April 8, 7.0 p.m.

The eruption has grown to a scale, which easily places it among the historic examples

of the volcano's fury, and almost every hour ita proportions andille terrors are increas ing.

Last night the activity of Vesuvius was continuous, and constantly increasing in violence, the spectacle in the blackness of dark and stormy night being thrilling id the extreme. Thousands of tons, ad

it seemed, of mattor in the shape of glowing masses were thrown up to a height of thousand yards, and a constant, pillar of flame 500ft, in height dominated the sky.

To aid to the horror, the night was full of the most alarming noises, loud thunder- ings and menacing tumblings assaulting the ear, while no less than three esthquake shocks came, one after another, driving the terrified inhabitants in all stages of dress

1376 and undress into the stree

streets. The churches

protect them from what seemed the impend- ing doom. It was's night such as has not

V

been within the memory of any one I know, and one that will certainly not be forgotten by any now alive in Naples.

いい

To-day the fears, ongendered by such, a night have been largely confirmed. The news has come that not alone has the fam. ous observatory been destroyed, but the village of Boscotrecase has been entirely submerged by a sea of black and molten lava, and the destruction of Torre An- nunziata ip imminent, for the river of lava, which has been steadily making its way Bouthward, was at the first tidings close to that "ahhport. The Vesuvian railway bas gdne, and Cook's hotel is engulfed.

Fortunately, the officials and the director of the observatory are safe, and the splendid and unwearying exertions of the 'còlgiers. and carabibiers has so far succeeded in eaving the lives of the inhabitants of the

afflicted district. With the help of military wagons they asalted the people of Torre Annunziata, Torre del Greco, Ottaiano. Resina, and Portai.to escape in good time. In carrying out this in too many cases— thanklees task they showed the utmost dovótion, and in many cas, s riked their lives to save children and the aged. No

At Torre Annunziata the utmost confu- sion reigned yesterday, and the most piteous Incidente Are related. The prisoners In boats to from the city gaola were

wire taken Naples. Warships and merchant vessels were harried to the port at an early hour to take away all who could be got of board to Naples and Castillmare.
