GERMANY AND THE BOERS.

Tribute to British Soldiers.

BERLIN, March 24. The Reichstax to-day continued the debate on the estimates for German South- West Africa. Colonel von Deimling allod-

od to an article in the Social Democratio Press, in which it was declared thas a certain report of the General Staff on the | subject of the military proficiency of the Boers had been intended to disparage – the British successes in the South African war. He said:

“I must repudiate most omphatically the impatations contained in the article in question. Nobody can better or more fully appreciate the magnificent valour and gallantry of the 'Bittish troops who faced the devastating fire of the Hours than the

Staff expressed its opinion en this point so Clearly that it rebeirdd the thanks of the British Press. This attempt at stirring up bad blood by Herr Ledebour is, therefore, futile. The fact it, that the General Do 1976: Wet himself has admitted it, that the mis-

take by "the" Boert Wha that they "whyn acted on the defensive," while the Hotērus

COTTAM & CO., LD adopted highly offensive tactics."

MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT.

The Various Groups.

It will probably surprise many people to know that there are at least 10 groups in the House of Commons which have separate organisations. First, of course, there are the "Liberals without adjectives.", Thon there are the Conservatives under Mr Balfour's leadership, the Liberal Unionists who follow Mr Chamberlain, the Free Trade Unionists who regard the Duke of Devon. shiro as their chief, and the Irish Orange- men who have Col. Saunderson as chair- man. The Irish Nationalists of course follow Mr Redmond, while the Welsh members look to Sir A. Thomas when they are acting together, and most of the Scottish Liberal members to Mr Crombie,

FIGHTING NEAR MUKDEN.

Serious Military Roverses in Fengtion.

Dispatches received from Mukden Shanghai mandarins report that, news having been received by the Tartar General Chao Erh-sen, of the existenco of a strong body of mounted bandits at a hamlet some thirty miles west of Mukden, His Excellency at once sent a squadron of mounted military police to disperse the Hunghutze. This was a week or so ago.

Arrived at the hamlet indicated, it was the bandits had made discovered that preparations for a semi-permanent stay there, going so far as to construct a battery' of three quick-firers on an elevated spot cast of the hamlet, and guarding the defile which led to the approaches of the place, thereby strengthening exceedingly already strong natural fastnesses.

Not only did the bandits do this, but it was also found that the Hunghutze chief had been collecting the government taxes from the inhabitants round about, In spite of the streugth of the place, the Major commanding the mounted police rashly attempted to attack the bandits, with the result that he was utterly defeat- ed, losing. many men, horses, armis, and Emmunition,

On hearing of the defeat, the Tartar- General ordered two regiments of foreign- modelled Chihli toops to reinforce the Manchurian battalion on its way to the hamlet, but before the Chihli troops arrived

Mukden, in consequence of which a great stream of refugees from the raided villages Is finding its way into, Mukdon to the East and Chinchou to the South. In the mean- while the commanders of the two Chihli regiments, in view of the superior numbers of the mounted bandite and the strength of their position, have decided to hold a hamlet some seven miles to the East of the bandits and there await reinforcements in the shape of three brigades of foreign-mo- delled Chihli troops who have been ordered by the Tartar General from garrison quar- ters in Chinchou to crush the Hunghütze, who made no presence of their intention to start a rebellion should they succeed in defeating the foreign-modelled troops in the coming battle for which they are making strenuous preparations.
