Opinion from Australia.

ý

The report of Mr Suttor, Commercial Agent in the East, in regard to the flour

frauds, is regarded by the Sydney Daily

Telegraph as dooidedly serious, as sovera prominent Sydney millers interviewed by the journal were careful to emphasise.

One firm, Mosers. Brunton, of the Australian Flour Mills, felt somewhat sceptical as to whether the frauds could be stamped out. There were, they pointed put, a dozen namnble instances of goods being put on our own markets which wore not made anywhere near the ostensible country of their manufacture, and it seemed likely that there would always be some such, In regard to the flour, there was such a multiplicity of brands. One arm here might send out to the East quito a dozen different brands, just to suit the traders at the other end. Many merchants liked their

1376 particular and special "chop," as the trade mark was colled, and as the Australian marker's name was not always on the bag

ERAL MANAGERS of the Company in the COTTAM &e CO., LD. there would be some dificulty in keeping

place of Messrs BENJAMIN, KELLY & POTTS, and that Article 50 of the Com. pany's Articles of Association be altered by substituting the words E. S. KADOOBIE & Co., for the words 'BENJAMIN, KELLY & THE POTTS.'

track of the bogus flour in his confusion of brands.

Mr J. W. Gillespie, of the Anchor Flour Mills, récently made a tour through the East, and his remarks were especially interesting. Ho did not think that the Chinese were at the bottom of the frauds. The whole thing, in his mind, was the

outcome of Yankee cuteness. In conse quence of the Chinese boycott of American goods, flour from the United States became a decided drug in the market. The stuff on hand had to be got off somehow, it being by no means an American rule to let stocks. rot on their hands. His firm some weeks. ago had received a private intimation that tiqusands of flour-bags made in the Australian style were being sent: from America. to China. That showed where the fault lay. He did not care, to believo that the Chinese were responsible for the frauds in any case. His experience of -800 Chinese business methods seemed to war-

Following upon Mr J. W. Gillespie'a suggestion of Government action, Mr Deakin, the Federal Prime Minister, was spokon to on the matter. "I have already Baken steps," he said. that the captain and the crew of ten men took to the boats. Ten minutes afterwards the "Baines Hawkina" foundered. For twelve hours the occupants of the captain's boat underwent a terrible struggle to effect a landing, and the men were almost exhaus ted when they finally succeeded.

The other boat, of which the coxswain was the sole occupant, has not been heard of, and doubtless foundered. The steamer was built at Blyth, in England, and was owned by the Cape Breton Steamship Company.

It appears that Princess Ena, on her marriage, will out herself off from England altogether. Her maids-of-honor are all

chosen from among the Spanish Court. The new Queen, it is said, will be very the language, and for that reason wishes to mach engrossed in perfecting herself in have only Spanish people about her. At first it was thought she would be aocom panied by one English lady-in-walting, but this decision has been altered as above.

It was while watching the Cambridge University team make their splendid stand against the famous "All Blacks," that ho began to wonder if anyone would take an interest in, or even believe, the fact that football was played by the Chinese several centuries before Julius Casar landed in Britain. Yet he has only to consult the faithful Ssu-ma Chien, who died B.c. 80, to gather some particulars. The ball, as originally used by the Chinese, was a round bag made of leather, or, as a poot says, eupplied by Dr Williams' Pink Pills gave "Eight pointed strips of leather made them both renewed health and dispelled into a ball," and was stuffed with hair; the terrible after-effects of influenza. mence no April 16.

From a passenger who arrived by the rain, which takes three days on the journey, we are pleased to give and account of his pleasant experience of the trip. From Reging to the north bank of the Yellow River, the country was most interesting and as all vegetation was bursting out into leaf and aided by mild spring weather, the whole surroundings wore most enjoyable. The much talked of stability or instability ~ of the Yellow River railway bridge was the matter of his special attention. We were exceedingly anxious to learn his view on this subject and listened to his description of the much talked of undertaking with no small degree of interest. Although not an engineer by profession, our friend bas a arge experiene in constraction works in Railways in the United States, and gave us his opinion of what he saw in "a most candid and straightforward manner, far as he could see of the upper structure of the bridge he is of opinion that no money has been spared to make it most

current into the apace between them; be considers the bridge a most substantial piece of work and a credit to the Engineers responsible for the construction. The train came across the bridge at the rate of about six to seven miles an hour. There was no vibration and the two miles trip over the Yellow River bridge was most enjoyable. From the Yellow River the Bcenery was lovely, and the cultivated fields and fruit trees were equal, if they don't surpass the best farms in California. Price to Pit and Pit Stalls. On the whole our friend was charmed with his trip and says that the ballasting and making of the railway generally le, better than he has seen any new track in the United States.-Hankow Daily News.
