THE NIGERIA TROUBLE.
Prompt Suppression.
LONDON, March 18.
The rebel natives défested at Salifu, in the province of Sokoto, Northern Nigeria,, nunibered 2000, and were entrenched. Cap tain Goodwyn, of the Royal Artillery, by whom they were attacked, commanded 500 men with maxims and a field gun:
The Munshi tribes have submitted.
The tribe in Southern Nigoria which killed and ate Dr Stewart near Old Calabar has been severely punished. Many of the tribesmen were killed by the punitive expedition.
The Munshis, a truculent tribe of can. nibals on the Benue, River, in Northern Nigeria, rose in robellion about the begin ning of the year, and aftacked the Niger Company's store at Abinsi, on the river. The assailants killed, every native they ancountered, and as it was market day there were 150 Hansa traders in the Iown, land theso shared the fate of those who were in the company's store, probably some 50 more. The agent in charge of the store, a native named Fraser, got away in a canoe, and mide for the nearest British station
with a garrison, but the first information reosived at headquarters, Sokoja, was brought by Mr J. E, Perking, an English- man, who was prospecting in the vicinity of Abinsi. The Munshis destroyed every telegraph between Ibi and Lokója, to prevent the news being wired. On a punitive expedition, numbofing about 1100 men, reaching Abinil, they found the town thoroughly Inoted. The houses of the inhabitants had been pillaged, and their money and valuablesħidden in the ground had been dug up. The Munshi people, who live on both banks of the Benue, have always proved a thorn in the side of the administra- tion, and although several expeditions have been sent against them, permanent coups- of the country bas never taken place.
Dr Stewart in December accompanied air expedition into the interior of "Southern Nigeria and he was returning to bead- quarters at Calahar, when he decided to stay for a couple of days at one of the camps. His escort remained with the main body of the expedition, the doctor retaining only his carriers. With these Dr Stewart 1376 subsequently started for Calabar River. As he was riding a bicycle he frequently got ahead of his carriers. On one of these Dccasions he missed the main road and got

into the village of a hostile tribe. The carriors never saw Dr Stewart alive again. They came upon his bicycle lying in the track, and then making further search they discovered portions of a human body. which they identified as that of their late master
They then hurried to the river, and gave information to the authorities. The report of the carriera showed that the body had been partly eaten by the mure derers. The village in which the murder occurred is only about two days' march

THE RUSSIAN PEASANT”
A p
His Political Awakening.
When Count Witte first took the Russian helm of state, and announced his intention of stilling the tempeste of revolution, he Lesured the newspaper correspondents that the Russian peasant was deaf to the appeal of reformers and Social Democrate; that the demagogue could not corrupt him, nor any disloyal thought-find-lodginènt in his simple heart. An anonymous writer in La Revue (Paris), however, says that people are very much mistaken about the muzhik. He is at present bitterly incensed against the Czar, and wide awake to his wn political rights and wrongs, This influential and important review says in its. last issue:
The ideas that have gone about the muzliks who have been brought in contact with the revolutionary agitation Are Ho much at variance with the actual condition of things, that it is time they should, be corrected. In a general way, therefore, it may he stated that throughout the country cantons the spirit of religique, aubmission has died out, and the child-like love of the Czar utterly evaporated.' The symptoms
of this absolute decay of loyalty are every- where apparent.
I will mention one incident among hundreds. “My emiñent and Raberty had been making an addross to the peasants in the government of Tver, and had explained to them the necessity of establishing a constitutional government. Lik» others he thought the muzhike would not tolerate any critician of the Cyar, su he carefully refrained from saying a word shout monarchy. When he ended, a pear ant jumped up and made the following re- marks: You have spoken well. But
you have not said all you thought. Wo are all friends here and don't wish to have any misunderstandings. To let you know how we passants take these, questions, we are going to put you at your ease.
I ask
all my brother peasants to join me in shouting out "Down with the Czar."* All present, every man of them peavants, joined in the words of execration, with furious clamor I hear like secounts from
ell quarters of the empire."
The writer, who sets about to give his readers an inside account of Russia's ro. volution, says that the peasants meet in public every Sunday, and formulato petitions to the Government, which in- variably reach their destination To quote:
**These resolutions, after bưng signed by those present, are regularly sent to the pre- fectures, and through the usual channels reach the ministry in St. Petersburg. They are piled up in bales, and fill whole offices, with their threatening bulk. These memorials from the peasanty will some day prove most important documents in estimating the progress of the Russian revolution. They reflect with the utmost delity the spirit of the poople. Only rarely, however, are they the production of peasants. They are introduced into the villages by revolutionary propagandists, who, after the meeting of, the peasants in over, make speeches, in which they explain the situation of things and induce those present to approve of the program, and to Hign it.
The total number of signatures given to such documents up to the end of last Octob was at least 3,500,000. The political programs are generally identical in tenor, and include universal suffrage, compul- sory education, distribution of lands, aboli. tion of the law of custe, institution of a national militia, and taxation only for necessary revenue. The peasants discuss these points with ardor, and show that they understand exactly what they are doing.'
The writer has a good word to say about the self-control and deliberateness of the revolutionaries. They are biding their time, and refraining from premature action. And he adds admiringly;
"These people are undoubtedly politi

TIENTSIN, April 2. The death of the Nanchang magistrate is being made use of for all it is worth by certain of the native newspapers here and in Peking which are rabidly anti-foreign, and which

One in particular, "Chung Hua Pao," published in Peking, and circulating right under the noses of the officials and the Court, reproduced on its front page, on Saturday, the photo of the dead magistrate, with the ghastly wounds in much evidence. This native sheet has all along been doing its best to make it unpleasant for foreigners, first the emigration of coolies to South Africa, and then the alleged illtreatment of them there, The "Loengwo" was a mass of lage from having provided a plethora of copy. SCOTTISH CUP TIE NOTES.
The third round of the Association Cup ties provided complete surprises. No one could have been certain that the Hibernians would defeat the Third Lanark, but the chances were supposed to be in favour of the Edinburgh team. However, intelligent predictions were belied once more, as the Hibernians suffered defeat by three goals to two. A much greater surprise, more over, was provided when news came that Port-Glasgow had defeated the mighty

A Valuable Magnifying MACHINE, LIFE
The semi-finalists aro now Port-Glasgow and Hearts; St Mirren and Third Lanark. It is difficult to see when the ties will be played off, as the Internationals will carry way the best men and prevent the games being played up to schedule arrangements. There was not much disparity between the Hibernians and Third Lanark on Saturday, but the Glasgow. toan was slightly superior. On the whole they deserved their win, if for nothing else because of their excellent shooting in the first half. At the beginning of the game they were never far off the mark, and the shot with which Cross scored was a fitting reward for the accuracy of their "potting. The best part of the Glasgow team was the half-back line, although the other divisionsHE Undersigned has received instruc-
performed creditably, too. Hill did not impress one much; for an Internationalist he was decidedly disappointing. His kick- ing lacked strength, though he placed with fair judgment, and his tackling was only moderate.
The Hibernian defence was the poorest it has been for some time. The forwards were not the worst part of the team, and if the centre had been more capable, the line might have been a success. In the first half the left wing worked exceedingly well, but the right wing has been soon to better advantage. The backs and goal- keeper must bear the responsibility for the three goals scored.
ACOTTISH LRBAQUE NOTES.
Several Losgue games. wore played on Saturday, but interest in the League has now practically expired. The match bet- ween Celtic and Queen's Park was interest- ing, because by the two points the Celts obtained there they won the championship. Of course, no other result to the competi tion has been anticipated for some time. The only rivals the Celts had were the Hearts, and they throw away their chance "by losing to weak opponents in irritating succession. It cannot be denied that the Colts have been the most consistently good team this seasion, and that they have won
the title of League Champions deservedly-
RUGBY NOTES.
The defent of Wales by Ireland in the International Rugby contest by 11 points to 6, was somewhat unexpected, though it is not difficult to see how it came about. The explanation lies clearly in the magnifi- oont play of the Irish forwards. The Irish pack played well against Scotland, but with a man short, owing to their adoption of the New Zealand system, they could not cope successfully with the powerful Scottish sight. What might have happened in the Scottish match, if Ireland had not 'made their foolish experiment, one can only surmise, but a fair deduction from Ireland's play on Saturday last is that the Scotsmen at least would not have won so easily.
The Rugby season is now practically over. The international with England on Saturday will be the last important match. Scotland has chosen a strong team, and should win casily enough. If that is the result, then England will be at the bottom of the international table, and the three other countries will have tied with two wins each, Wales, however, will retain the championship, which they won last year, since this season no country has topped them.
