the age of sixty-three, will be received with widespread regret, says the Daily Mail. It is a strange coincidence that the famous picer should have died at Gambols, in the Upper Soudan, where he saw some of his hardest and most successful servico.

General Sir William Gatacrop the hero of the Chitral and Soudan campaigns, and the man who led at Stormberg, was one of the most popular and distinguished— and at the same time most unlucky-of the nation's soldiers.

"The Soldiers' General" was the name given him by the men who served under him. He went to Egypt with a great repu- tation, which he seized every bdcasión to increase, at whatever, coat to himself. Here is a pen-picture of the famous officer drawn by the late G, W. Steevens, the 1376 Daily Mail war correspondent:—

TENDERS for the purchase of the said resolved to be in the van whatever was Wreck, will be received up to happening. A correspondent, who lives in THURSDAY, the bra of JULY, 1906, at the neighborhood where the General used to hunt tells how, when driving in a quiet lane, he would occasionally be startled by the huntsmen crossing the road in full cry and in the following order:

First came the General, coming over the one hedge und. disappearing over the other with the speed of lubricated lightning. Then ensued an interval. Next came a few members. of the General's stall, who went acrose the road with alinust equal: fury.

Then came the fox, Reynard being fol- dowed in more conventional order by the hounds and the civilian huntamen. Then came the fox" is full of amusing signifi- cance when one remembers the General's linpetuous temperament.

General Gatacre was a little man, fft, 4in. in height. He came of a Shropshire familly, and was born in 1843, Ho' did brilliant service in Burma and Chitral, as well as the Soudan, but, as all the world remembers, had unfortunato experiences in South Africa, where during the late war he commanded a division under Gen: eral Buller.

His boldly-conceived night march on Storinberg ended in utter rout.

LAWN TENNIS,

The Annual Tournament.

The annual Lawn Tennis Tournament promoted by the Hongkong Cricket Club has been delayed considerably by the recent wet weather; the date for the con- clusion of the first round has passed and practically nothing has been done. The programmes have been published and show that a large amount of interest is being taken in the tournament. entries for each competition are numerous and good contests are anticipated. There are ten entries for the Championship, the winner having to play off last year's cham- -pion-II. Pinckney, In the first-round-
