Interesting Report.

In connection with Army field training, an interesting memorandum has been issued at Aldershot. The Standard recently gave an outline of the new spirit that is being infused this year into the preparation of the troops for war, and Colonel P. T. Buston, chief engineer of the Army Corps, shows in this new memorandum, which he issues on behalf of Sir John French, how the Japanese infantry made their famous rushes. The Aldershot troops are to study the methods of perfect field cover as used by the Japanese in advancing to, the at- tack. This important meniorandum is as follows:-

The main lessons to be gathered from a study of the fold engineering work carried out during the late war between Russia and Japan, as far as concerns the infantry, are, I think, first, that' cách ́infanity, soldier must be provided with an entrending tool, secondly, that he should be as expert in the use of his entrenching tool as he is

The "offensive" is what,

to the up sent, I do not think we have ever practis. ed; and perhaps the following extract from General Kuropatkin's instructions to the Russian troops may serve to niake my meaning clearer. He says of the Japanese infantry :-

Thoy advance in widely extended order; the firing line advance at the doublé for a short distance, and then lie down and begin to dig. Notwithstanding our extremely heavy fire, they again'double forward, lœv- ing their half-constructed trenches, and begin to dig new ones. The "defensive" is the work that the infantry soldier will have to do when a position is taken up; in this case the work to be done will be decided, and marked out, by the officer in charge, and will form part of a general design. Care will have to be taken that the tronches and works

value. The Russians, however, learnt by HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS

experience, and we find that at Shou-shan-

pu and Liao-yang the trenches, though of the same type, murged gradually into the hill sides, and were carefully covered with

groen sods, so as to be as inconspicuous as possible. In taking up a position it will not be sufficient just to dig the ordinary shelter trench; this is what the Russians didnt Fenlin and Yushulin; they had had 48 hours to entrench themselves, and might in this time have made a very strong position; but they were content to con- struct shallow shelter tronches, and the result was that when attacked they had to evacuate them.

The infantry soldfør must realise that to be successful he must make his position as strong as possible-first, by digging his -helter trench, and making it as incon- spicuong as possible by covering it with boughs or grass or whatever grows on the Surrounding land, military pits must be dug in front, barbed wire and other obstacles put up where material is available, bomb- proof shelters must be erected in rear of his position, and commununicating trenches constructed to them, in fact, from the moment he takes up a defensive position he must make up his mind to work hard, und to do all that hard work and skill can do to make his position as impregnable as possible. In the late war it was generally found that an entrenched position with good obstacles in front was practically un- assailaleb by day.

Cónsus To Be Ta

Takon,

The statement made at a recent meeting of the Sanitary Board that 60,000 Chinese have left the Colony in consequence of the operation of the Public Health and Build- ing Ordinance has catised a great deal of discussion. There are a large number of people who hold that this is an exaggera. tion, and in fact that although a number of people may have gone away that there has been nothing in the shape of an exodus.

The Governor has apparently takon the matter up, for it is stated on very good authority that a sensus of the Colony is, to be taken shortly, in order to ascertain the population and have something definite to work upon.

It is only about five years since the last census was taken and in the

present instance the water population will not be included. The police will no doubt take the consus as in provious years.

The first rifle meeting promoted by the

ENDERS said Hongkong Volunteer Rifle Club was held on Friday, Saturday and Monday at the Wrest, or the purchase of the sto Tai Hang range. The weather was not THURSDAY, the Bтn of JULY, 1906, at favourable for good shooting, being for the.. most part dull and wet. The entries for the various events were small, especially for the Championship, of the Corps, only 13 competitors out of a total membership of 374. The shooting of one or two of the riflemen was good, but on the whole it was only fair, especially in the Ladies' Nomination. made throughout the meeting, that by Sergeant Terrill at 500 yards, Bombadier Marshall shot very well indeed, so woll that he had to give up three prizes—the conditions under which the meeting was conducted preventing a competitor from taking more than two prizes, except in the open events and Championship. Sergeant Terrill, Bombadier Watson and Gunner Austen also had to give up one prise At the conclusion of the shoot. ing on Monday afternoon the prizes were presented to the quccessful com potitors by Mrs C. J. Pritchard Major Pritchard, Commandant of the Corps, in a short speech expressed the thanks of the Corps to those who had generously donated prizes. The meeting had been a success, thoughhe expected to see a larger number of Volunteers competing, but he was of opinion that the holidaye kept many away. Horead a letter which he had received froin His Excellency the Governor, expressing regret at not being able to attend and give away the prizes. Major Pritchard referred to the good work done by Lieut. M. S. Northcote in arranging the meating and tendered him bis sincere thanks. He also thanked the officers of the Corps who had assisted in making the meeting a success, The prize donors were-His Excellency the Governor, Sir Paul Chater, Messrs J. R. M. Smith, A, Turner, W.
