You have each one been guilty of the most corrupt perjury, and in virtue of the provisions of the law which empowers me to deal at once with such cases, I commit ench of you to prison for three months.

Mr Sharp held that the defendant had only himself to blame in making extravagant statements and he ought not to have his costs:

PLAQUE AT AMOY.
(From Our Ourrespondent.)
AMOY, April 9. There are signs that the plague is going to appear with its usual regularity about this time of the year. A little baby was recently brought in its mother's arms to the local Chinese Hospital to be treated, but it as found to be in the last stages of the disease, and died not very long after it was seen by the doctor.
The Secretary of the Hospital intends to have matsheda erected outside the Hospi. tal compound for the accommodation of patients suffering from plague.

The overland service across the Isthmus of Suez was continued until, and for a short period after, the opening of the Canal in 1889. The early steamers were, of courso, comparatively small, the largest up to the beginning of the seventh decade being 3770 lous ; and it was not until the late eighties, when the compounding of steam greatly reduced the coal consumption, that much larger vessels

of
Data published in tabular form by Engineering clearly indicate that careful management, not only in respect of mechanio developments, but al o financo, which has characterised Sir Thomas Sutherland's régime. As regards the capital paid up, the recent increases- small in relation to the improvement in the floor have been raised on debentures ; and it is at once a testimony to the greatly improved financial status of the company to state that, whereas in 1870 the deben tures carried interest at 41 per cent,, the rate now is only 34 per cont. The original debentures were paid off by 1891. and the new debentures were crosted in 1902. In 1890 the capital of the company was divided equally inte preferred and deferred stock, the former carrying 6 per cent. interest," Aga consequence of the impro- voment in general management, the divid end on the ordinary capital has advanced to 13 per cent, now paid, 13 per cent, being reckoned as bonus. The gross revenue has advanced in the same ratio as the tonnage, notwithstanding reductions in passenger fares and freight charges to meet ever. Increasing competition. In twenty-five years the tonnage of the largest ship has been doubled, the horse-power trebled, and the speed increased from 16 to 18.5 knots.

In estimating the significance of the latter, HE Undersigned has received instruc It must always be remembered that the
voyages undertaken are exceptionally long, the distance between possible coaling sta tions considerable, and that to attempt a very high mean speed would involve a coal consumption which would require such ex- tensive bunker capacity as to reduce the cargo space beyond the possibility of financial success.

The book value of the fleet has been kept within very close limits; the amount to-day is not more than the average thirty years ago, notwithstanding that the number of ships has increased from fifty to sixty-three, and the tonnage from 127,000 to 400,000 tons. This, however, is but a poor measure of the worth of the fleet, because not only is there greater constructional strength. but more comfortable accommodation, and more powerful machinery, in order to obtain higher speeds. The largest ship bas increased by easy stages to 10,512 tons, and instead of the propelling power being In the ratio of 1 horse-power per ton, it is 1.5 hores-power per ton. There has been a continuous allowance for depreciation; and as the company have their own underwrit- ing fund and have been fortunate in VALUABLE HOUSEHOLD J. C. Goodlee, Mr Arthur Smith, Me The Champagnie Chargeurs Reunis str.
having few casualties, owing to careful organisation and efficient personnel, it has been possible from time to time to sell old ships, and replace them with, new and modern steamers. Within the last three Feare the company have added to the fleet 18 new steamers, with an aggregate of 146,444 tons, and with machinery of 138,000 horse-power. The total value of these is nearly four millions sterling.
