About the same time, there was appearing in the Australian papers this telegram:~~- Adelaide, Sunday,
A Leigh's Creek correspondent reports that A. M. Smith, who shot himself at Oodnadatta a couple of weeks ago, was the son of an English clergyman, and was none other than the famous de Rougemont, who brought himself into prominence by publishing in the "Wide World Magazine"

and his English remittances were late. It is said that Smith was wonderful storyteller, and kept his listeners intently interested with stories of his alleged adventures.
Certainly of the many romancers who N. LAZARUS,
have visited the colonies he was the most Audacious. Had his book been published as fiction it would probably have had a great sale, because it was at once exciting and plausible. Much of it was even true, but his English publishers must needs stoutly maintain during a considerable period of exposure that it was all true. . Sir, Goorge Newnes, proprietor, and Mr Fitz- gerald, editor of the "Wide World Magazine," in which the story appeared, insisted on this, and they succeeded in vetting for their protege not only two invitations to read papers before the British Association, but scoured the warm endurement of such men as the editor of "The Stateman's Year Book;" Scott Keltie, F.R.G.S., F.S.S. F.S.A. L.L.D., former secretary of the Royal Geographical Society, and member of ever so many learned societies, to vouch for Rougemont and statements by him which any Australian Public School child would have laughed at. Vinally, even De Rougemont's backers had to admit the truth. They wore in the awkward position of either admitting themselves gulled by stories which should not for a moment have deceived an intelli- gent man, or of having deliberately at. tempted to gull the public. De Rougement lectured in England afterwards, occasion- ally meeting an Australian who denounced him from the body of the hall, and he came out here and appeared at the Tivoli. At Melbourne he offered to demonstrato his turtle riding story practically, but he finally drifted out of sight until this "boom" in London was started, and now comes the South Australian report of his death. Probably a good romancer was lost in him for want of a little sound judgment in him. solf or his advisers, Sydnely Daily Tele graph.

Alleged Conspiracy.
(From Our Correspondent.)
CANTON, April 9.` Some interesting details have been brought to light here in connection with certain loans made by the Hongkỏng and Shanghai Banking Corporation, through its | late compradore, Lau Wai Chun, to the Canton Wai Shing lottery.
The British Consul at Canton made representations to the Viceroy, upon which the latter telegraphed to the Liang
Kiang authorities demanding the arrest of the Lao Hok Shun (the head of the Wai Shing) and his return to Canton for trial. From Canton officials I gather that Lau Hok Shun has managed to get the Viceroy of Liang Kinng to reply to the Viceroy of Canton stating that the Wai-Shing has at credit of Profit and Loss account the sum of $200,000; that there was no loan from the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank against the Wai Shing's property, as there was nothing in black and white to go upon; that Inu Wai Chun and others must have entered into a deliberato conspiracy with a view to defrauding Lau Hok Shun,

How a sentry on duty at Windsor Castle thought he saw a ghost and fired soveral shots at it, chipping a stone elephant with his bullets, was revealed at a military inquiry at the royal borough on March 5.
It was a story worthy of the Castle's supernatural reputation. But for the in- jury to the elephant the sentry's ex- periences would probabably have gone down to future generations as a legend as thrilling as that of Herno the Hunter.
The man belonged to the 2nd Coldstream Guards, and declares that whilst on sentry. go on historic East Terrace, on Saturday night, he saw the figure of a "ghost" glidu" up the steps of the East Terrace.

THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
THE
made no impression, so I fired the other STOCKBROKERS' TELEGRAM CODE will be held at the CITY HALL, on
four.
The bullets must have gone clean through the ghost, but they left it unharm
ed, and then it disappeared."
In the meantime the sentry's comrade heard the shots and hastened to his friend's assistance. He found him absolutely dazad, and in a condition that indicated most unusual fright.
*
The scared man related his story, but the second sentry could not find any trace of the ghost, the assumption being that having had five shots fired at it the appari- tion had discreetly retired, after an adventure sufficiently full of interest and incident.
The Castle guard was then called out,
and to the officer in command the exciting story was retold. The sentry reported that he had seen a man with piercing eyes and long flowing robes," and he is certainly not the only man who avers that he has Encountered similar supernatural mani- festations.
His commanding officer, however, took an unsympathetic view. When the man, whose name is Bentley, was brought before Major Lambton at the Victoria Barracks he was charged with "firing without
sufficient cause.
**I
Bentry stoutly defended himself. gave the challenge Halt!' and 'Who goes thore?" said the accused private. "On receiving no answer I had to use my rifle." After the major had carefully considered the case Bentley was sentenced to three days' confinement to barracks.
The "Daily Mirror" saw the adjutant on the matter but he was very reticent. Ho says he thinks the man was suffering from hallucinations, and that there was no human figure on the terrace, at all. The firing took place under the windows of the King's apartments.
The adjutant was reminded that an officer of the Guards had stated that he Baw a ghost of Queen Elizabeth in the Royal Library at the Castle a few years ago, and that the affair created much Bensation throughout the country. He said that he had not heard of it before, and launghed at the idea.
Bentley, for whom some sympathy is følt, comes from Leicestershire, and is a steady, sober man. There are five marks. on one of the ornamental elephants at the entrance to the beautiful sunken gardens, and it is thought that Bentley must have mistaken the elephant for a man in the dim light of early dawn. The elephant is chipped, and that probably is the explana- tion of this remarkable story.
Windsor Castle has an almost unparallel- ed reputation for ghosts. Report hath it that it is subject to the uncanny visitations of several of England's sovereigns, includ- ing Queen Elizabeth, Henry VIII., Charles 1., and all the Georges.
