In their weekly phare report dated 9th GEO. ANGUS & CO.,
April, Messrs Vernon and Smyth state,
The improvement reported in our Tast has continued and fair busineke has been transacted, while rates have maintained and in many cases improved the position. Many of our chief stocks, which haya prao- tically been dormant for some time, have been again dealt in, and Incipient further improvement lû the market is quiet notice. able at the time of closing.
Banks-Hongkong and Shanghais, with an improvement in the London rate to £90, havo ruled, firmer änd a fair number of shares have changed hands at $860, the market closing steady at that rate. A fair number of local males have been put through, and several small lots have been purchased for Shanghai account, Natiofiale continue in demand at $40, but sharos remain very BCArce; it is doubtful, however, whether buyers would spring the rate if any shares were forthcoming.,

The master of the fishing boat reported what had taken place to Inspector Robinson, at Shaukiwan police station later on in the day, and he engaged a launch and went to the spot. Here he found the four boats still at

Seven men were arrested and charged, at the Magistracy this morning, with stealing from a craft in distress.
The defendants in their statements declared that the clothing and other articles waro given to them by the complainant, who was grateful for being rescued, and wished to reward them, .
The complainant in reply to Mr Hazeland, denied that he had promised to give or had given the defendants anything for saying his life. These arose in con- soquence of the changes of Admiralty policy after the contract for the ships had been made. Mention is also made of pay- ment of £8,000 to Rear-Adiniral Sir Percy Scott for his inventions in connection with naval gunnery. The gross expenditure on the Navy for the year was £36,859,681, of which $34,456,282 was for the maintenance of the active service, and £2,403.399 for half-pay, pensions, and gratuities.
The Committee on Naval Designs has, it is stated, recommended that no more small protected cruisers be built. The war fleet of the future is to consist of battleships and armoured cruisers, the torpedo flotillas and submarines forming separate self- contained forces.
