'THE WORLD'S COAL DEPOSIST.
The well-known journal Stahl und Elsen has recently published some figures bear- ing upon the above queation, of which the paper seems to take a more optimistic view than is often the case. The outlook, more especially as far an Germany is concerned, is considered quite re-assuring, inasmuch as her deposits of coal are put down at

Added to this, the paper states that there
is some reason to believe that coal deposits
of Germany have been under estimated,
and that they may be put at as much as 415 milllards of tons. The other European Powers, in the opinion of the paper, are much less favourably positioned. Thus the

amount to only about half to those of Ger- many, or about 193,000,00,000 tons, and as the annual consumption is twice as big as that of Germany, England may have ex- hausted her supplies as soon as in some 350 years. As regards the other countries, the coal deposits of Belgium are estimated to contain 23 milliards of tons of coal, those of France 19 milliards, those of Austria 17 milliards, and those of Russia about 40 milliard tons. The whole making an aggregate for Europe of about 700 milliards of tons of coal. The coal do- posits of North America are estimated to contain nearly as much as those- of Europe, or 681,000,000,000 tons, but evon. this gigantic figure is completely dwarfed by Asia's wealth of coal, as
to which it is at present impossible to make China ар even approximate estimate. more especially seems to possess inexhau- stible supplies, and a German scientist has put the coal deposits of the province of Shansi, alone at 1,200,000,000,000 tons. Siberia and the island of Sakhalin also
contain vast coal deposits, and altogether the paper does not see any cause of alarm as to a universal ooal famine.
Coaling Record.
A record in connection with coaling operations in Bombay harbour was esta blished on the 7th March when 1,150 tone of coal were put on board H.M.8. Their origin and their success is most interesting. Some years ago Chaa, Forde, an eniment Australian scientist, discovered a purely vegetable substance which has the peculiar property of acting on the human system in exactly the same way as nature's animal substance, hile. After much careful study he combined this substance with some eight other vegetable ingredients, and then concentrated the product so obtained until a suitable dose could be compressed into
the space offered by a small bean. This
medicine made up in the form of a "bean for the bile,' soon became widely known 46 Bile Bonus. Their use simply revolu tionised the old method of pepsin, bismuth, or mercury dosing, and of starving sufferers from liver trouble and indigestion by placing them on liquid diet, Bile Beans do not give temporary relief only, and leave the patient weakened, like the out-of-date, so-called remedies of forty or fifty years ago, containing probably alone, mercury, and other harmful drugs, de

LONDON, March 2. For two weeks the Houses of Parliament
have debated thoroughly the question of Chinese Inbour in the Transvaal, and the result has been to blow away inany of the cobwebs that obscured it. The party at present in power never liked it, and in fact, climbed into place as much by voicing their high moral disapproval of it as by any other electoral device, but it is far better that they should be inconsistent than that the empire should suffer, and the Opposition cannot well do anything else than allow the Liberals to swallow all their anti-election statements and behave a little more wisely in power than they talked in those days. It is not exclusively true that lowliness is young ambition's ladder, to be discarded

INTERNATIONAL RUGBY,
From exchanges to hand, per French mail, we take the following:-The Scottish
Rugby team was much too good for Ireland at Belfast, winning by 13 points to 6. The Scotsmen played well in all departments. The new three-quarter line, about which there has been much head shaking, proved equal to the occasion, and both in offensive and defensive work reached a high stain. dard. played his best international gamo. All over nothing but satisfac ion can be expressed with the work of the team and the same fifteen can be depended upon to settle England at Inverleith shortly.
Ireland, thouch rather bidly beaten, on play even more than on points, were not a weak side. They suffered from playing seven forwards, and a spare man at bao. Their seven could not cope with Scotland's eight, and the odd man in the back division was more a hindrance than a help. At full back Ireland was excellently served; in this division alone wern the opponenta equally matched.

Scottish Cup Ties. Saturday, February 24, was day for the Edinburgh Association clubs. Both the Hearts and the Hibernians won their Scottish Cup ties, and the Hearts are safely into the semi-final. Tho Hibernians long protructed struggle with Partick Thistle has ended in their favour, but only after what, it must be renceded, was a distinct piece of luck.

The football on Saturday, when the teams met for the third time, was distinctly poor. And the game
was notable only for the three penalties which
Two of vere given pere these fell to Partick but both were missed, whilst the other was converted by the Hiberniana, who finally won by the only goal. Partick for this reason must be counted singularly unlucky, but victory has probably gone to the better team. The Hibernian back division - not so steady as usual on Saturday—is superior to Partick's rearguard, and between the two sets of fer- wards there is not much to choose.
The Hearts victory over the Celta at Parkhead was a magnificent achievement, and gave nubounded scope to the shrieking followed the team partisane who had through to Glasgow. Many doubted the Hearts ability to win, but these sceptics
had forgotten the doggedness with which the Hearts always face the Celtic, and the reputation the Edinburgh team bas do- servedly won for rising to a greatest oc casion. The whole team played with the desire to win, and the result was that

The Celta got their goal through one of those slips that G. Philip all through his career has had a weakness for making On the other hand, both the Hearts goals were beautifully taken. The game was one of the best ever seen in the Cup ties, and the excitement reached the fever heat associated with the final or even with Int national against England. The Hearts will journey in all probability to Ibrox, for it cannot be expected that the winner of the Port Glasgow Kilmarnock tie will defeat the Rangers. The match will be a stiff one for the Hearts, who were always somewhat nervous in facing the Rangers but after defeating the Celts they can surely dispose of this year's mediocre Light Blues. Playing at the top of their game, the Hearts should win, but anything less than their best form will not do against the Rangers if the latter are at the height of their game, as they will take care to be.
