NOTICE OF MEETING,
THE WORK OF WOMEN.
The number of occupations in which women are 'engaged is increasing year by year. Some of the latest industries and professions the ladies have invaded are those of house decorator, compositor, rent ̈collector, architect, and lecturer. Con cerning the first of these, the English. woman's Year Book for 1906" states that there are several firms, owned by women, which employ women as Interior decorators, sto. As to lady compositors, these are nothing new, One West-end firm of printers employs them; and there is also a Women's Printing Society, which a co-operative firm, Lady rent collectors, can earn from £30 to £80- per annum, and there are already many such employed in London. There are or three successful women also two architects at present practising in the metropolis. Pharmacy is an occupation that is claiming more and more the atten. tion of the fair sex, and commercial travel. litig occupies the energies of 155 in London 1376 alone. PAY-DAY ON THE PANAMA CANAL.
Unloading a Trainful of Money:
1
No more interesting scenes could be
imagined, says a London writer, than those in the various camps on the Panama Canal, when the great army of labourers employed by the United States Government are
their wages from a special train filled AM
money chiefly bags of a thousand dollars each, weighing about sixty pounds. The skilled white labourers and office employés, about 2,500 in all, receive their pay once a month, amounting to £50,000, in much the same way as ordinary Government olerks are paid in Washington Of the labourers, however-largely Jamaican pe groes-there are of presont 15,000 at least, and they draw about £120,000 a mouth in fortnightly payments, -
One might think that the pay clerks in their train-loan of specie would feel- uncomfortable among this army of dusky giants, especially when the train halte in some small tropical camp and great snoks of silver are unloaded in the jungto. The 1174 other day at Panamy I saw sixty thousand dollars put on the paycar for the so-called **silver men" working at Tabernilla, San Pablo, Cristobal, Gatun, and Bohio, Some Jamaican coloured police were watching the negro-boys bringing out the sacks of silver, and others stood by the waggone while the money was put on.

IN FAVOUR OF DUELLING.
Discussion in the Reichstag.
A Berlin message to the Times gives a full and interesting account of the incident in the Reichstag connected with the declaration of Prince Buelow in favour of duelling. The annual debate on the sub- ject of duelling took place in the Reichstag où January 15th in connection with an interpellation on the part of the Clerical Daputy Herr Roeren, who asked the Im- porial Chancellor whether he was aware Muhlmelmon that last August, at
the Rhine, a lieutenant of Landwehr, Feldhaus by name, bad heen dismissed the service by the vordiof the local Land- wehr Court of Honour for refusing to challenge to duel a man who had insulted im. After amicable settlement by a Court
not
of Honour had been refused, the complain. ant had submitted the matter to a Court of law, which condemned his opponent, for wanton and provocative libel, to the pay. ment of the heaviest statutory fine. A sentence of imprisonment was imposed on account of the defendant's youth and of the fact that he was in bondage to one-sided student traditions. Never- theless, Feldhaus was dismissed from the service for not having preferred a dual to trial by a Court of law.

We have published recently several cablograms in regard to the native rising in Natal The following, taken from the Daily Mirror explaine. how the trouble originated;
Natal is seriously alarmed by the fact that armed natives have attacked the police in the Richmond district, and have, killed Sub-Inspector Hunt and Trooper Arm strong,
It appears, says Reuter, that the local chief informed the police detachment that the natives were determined to resist the imposition of the poll tax. The pollos arrested two armed natives, but were subsequently ambushed by a party of forty
natives.
The leader of the party contemptuously truck, the inspector across the face with the flat of his assegal, and was thereupon shot fatally. In the general méléo which ensued the inspector and a trooper wore killed, while a sergeant was wounded; and the troopers were finally compelled- to
rotreat.
The Natal Carbineers, a force of artillery, and the police in the outlying district, have been called in, and are proceeding to the scone of the affray. It is feared that the trouble may spread.

THE
SIMPLE HISTORY:
OF A YOUNG GIRL
HER childhood could not bave been happier, but from the moment the entered girlhood the ravages of anemia brought sorrow and suffering into her life. And this is the history of thousands of girls in this country. Yet many others, by the timely use of Dr Williams Pink Pille, have regained lost health and happiness. An example is Miss Bessie Brown, who lives in the village of Avonwick, South Devon, England. She
states:-
When I was fourteen I began to be pale
and weak from growing too fast. I was very anomic, and as this complaint grew more severe indigestion followed; food gave me violent pains. I was only saved from worse troubles (for neglected anemia leads to consumption) by Dr Williams' Pink Pills, most wonderful medicine. Practically I had suffered almost continu- ously for six years."
