BURGLARY BY HYPNOTISM.
A new terror has been added to burglary, Hypnotism has taken the place of the re- volver, and is proving much more effective and far less dangerous to all concerned. Quite recently in Sunderland (England),
the great shipping port of the north coast,
u series of most remarkable burglaries have takon place. Scotland Yard detectives, summoned to assist the local police in solv ing the mystery or mysteries, have succeed- ed in running to earth one of the burglars, but the arrest has served only to deepen the mystery. It is believed that a band bf trained hypnotists, skilled in the art of mesmeris, is operating in the town and conpolling viction to: obey
in the dead of night by the presence of robbers hd their rooms have been over. Then the
powered by mesmeric influence howorkfor
robbers have proceeded about
looting the residences, paying not the slightest attention to their helpless victlins while they worked, Those victims luvg, of course, been as powerless as if drugged, bound, and gagged. The capture And positive identification of Charles Graham, one of the hypnotic robber gang, for à "time" "Velieved the "feeliligoftöffor that pervaded the entire city of Sunderland; but when he failed to give any explanation of the crimes or~-to- reveal the identity of the rest of the gang the panic of fear descended again upon tho people. The first place robbed was the re 1797 bidence of a man named Darius Martin. The case presented strange features. Mar tin was sleeping peacefully, when suddenly a strange noise in the room awoke him." As,

Matin reported tires case to the police, who scoffed at Dis tale, and declared that he simply had been too frightened to move.
The idea of the situation changed t little later whon William Morris,va (mer-1 chant, reported to the police an exactly similar crime, in which he was the victim. As the story of the first hypnotic robbery, Ind not been made public, the police were startled, and began a rigid investigation.
Then came on astounding series of rol beries, all alike, and the police at once de- cided that some dangerous hypnotist was

-colleges in the United States for approval, HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS
and which will, when they are approved
as they are absolutely sure to be, completely
revolutionise the game as played.
The new ruler, as finally perfec ed will absolutely prevent rough playing and will ensure an open and free kicking game, such as has been advocated by the reformers for some time. The session of the committee was presided over by T. M. Dennis of. Cornell, who announced that there would be another meeting of the committee, at which time the question of the elimination of roughness from football playing would be threshed out and possibly the game put on a more solid and con servative basis.
Four sub-committees wore heard in re- lation to the revision of rules and in this
report they described the brutal playing
that was to be eliminated as follows:-
Striking with fists, elbows, knees, or deliberato kicking of an opponent should be punished by disqualification for the rest of the game, and the offending team should load the distance of its own goal line. They suggested that substitutes should not be allowed to take the place of any disqualified player.
Particular atross was laid on the words Hannecessary roughness," and this includes the striking of a player running with the ball, hitting in the face with the heel of the hand, striking with locked hands by lines. mon in-breaking through. The penalty of this roughness should be ton yards.
On the question of opening up of play, 'It was agreed that any man back of the snap. per-back be allowed to make a forward pass, but hurdling on the line is to be prohibited.

Bank and Police Questions.
LONDON, March 4.
The conference at Algeciras has adopted bank scheme drafted by the committee, being a sort of compromise of the French, German, and Moroccon schemes, but several important points being incomplete, these are reserved for further discussion.

Germany, Austria and Morocco voted against the bank schumo.

APIA, December 24.-The active volcano en North Savaii still continues to outflow Ha lava, which has now reached the ses in two places, and is advancing still in another direction. No one can predict upon any data that we have when this flow will ceuse. Until recently no harm was done, but much useful land and some small acreage of cultivations on North SavaiiHE FIRST ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING of the MEMBERS will have been permanently destroyed. That ia, they lie under from 10 to 20 feet of solid be held at the OFTY HALL, on TUESDAY, the 13th March, 1906, at 5.30 p.m., Six lava. A number of houses were burned as HENRY BERKELEY, Chairman of the Asso the lava flood passed along. This eruption o:ion, will preside. opened its crater about 15 miles to east- ard of the previous outburst in 1902, thus showing that the north side of Savaii is pretty well honeycombed with Internal disturbances. Previous to the break out. three years ago, there had been no eruption within the recollection of the oldest in-
habitant, and so far as tradition can be de- pended on, at least 150 years of quietude had elapsed during the interval of rest.
The sight presented to the astonished gazer upon this stupendous effort of nature La wonderful, beautiful, and awe inspiring. It is possible to traverse the country at the back of the crater and to ascend some of the higher hills in its neighborhood, and from good vantage points observe the For hours numerous changes of action.
the volcano will remain quiet, while ite glowing bowlful of white-hot lava will reflect itself in gorgeous colors on the clouds. These show red and fiery, or are discoloured with peculiar smokes, which which make up weird effects to be viewed with ease from Apin some 50 miles away. Then, perhaps after repeated loud explo. sions, some of which tremble the very mountains on all sides, the crater will over- now, and the glowing lava, thin and liquid, will course down the precipitous sides, making for the distant ocean, which it altimately reaches in a very much congealed state. At times clouds of half-molten rock will be thrown skyward and descending splash the liquid lava in all directions→ Nature's grand display of fireworks. This great eruption has now been in full opera- some six months, and at this moment it is grander than ever.
