GROWTH OF JAPANESE
INDUSTRIE
In consideration of the Japanese Govern ment's proposal to create if union of all the match factories throughout the Empire, it La very interesting to note the development which has taken place in what may be called the essentially` modern Industries of Japan. Examining the customs returns of exporte during the past few years, we find~~ the following figures:

... 9,096,035 108,897,425 This is a very remarkable development. Were the ratio of increase to continue un. changed the export of those eight staples alone would reach more than a thousand million Jen in 1919.We have not included in the table such things as lacquers, en-
■mels, Ivories, umbrellas, lanterns and so forth, for it would appear that although some development is taking place in these directions, it is not very significant-Mail.

DOCK ACCOMMODATION
IN JAPAN.
The Osaka Asaki has an interesting article on the docking accommodation of Japan, which is worth reproduction. Our contemporary observes that during the war the greater portion of the steamers owned by the Nippon Yusen Kaisha, Osaka Shosed Kaisha, and other private owners were requisitioned by the Government as transports, and owing to the pressure of circumstances the repair of many of these ships has long been neglected: The con sequence has been that many of the vessels discharged from the Government service require more or less overhauling, with the result that nearly all the dockyards int Japan now find their hands full.
The Asahi belictes there is room for more dockyards, an, extension that is justi- fied by the great increase in the merchant, fleet of the country. At present there ase twenty duckyards in Japan capable of ac- commodating vessels of over 1,000 tons displacement, namely, one at Hakodate, two at Ishikawajinia (Tokyo), two at Yoko- hama, two at traga, three at Osaka, three at Kobe, three at Innoshima, and four at Nagasaki. The largest is at Nagasaki,

which measures 720 feet in length. The H. B. M.'s GOVERNMENT, &c. &c. docking business at Kobe seems to be most prosperous at present. The Mitsui Float- ing Dock at this port, which began business only six months ago, has up to date accom. undated po fewer than fifty vessels, and others are waiting. The same activity prevails in the Kawasaki Dockyards, and whom the Nippon Yusen Kaisha and other companios begin the needful repair of their

circumstances are not likely to have their ships overhauled at Shanghai or Hongkong, because though the docking charges at these places are lower than in Japan the cost of repairing is higher. The docking charge of the Mitsu Bishi Kaisha at present, is yen 550 per 250 tons for three days and above this tonnage 60 sen for every ton. The wages of mechanics and common labourers are said to have risen by 20 per cent. compared with this time last year.
Although there is a marked tendency in shipbuilping circlesto build leviathan vessels, the condition of trade in the East, to again) quote the Osaka journal, does not require
many vessels of over 10,000 tons displace ment. Consequently these is little necessity for larger docks, for the present at all events. The largest dock at Nagasaki, for example, can easily receive such a ship as the **Doutschland," which measures 706 feet. With the exception of the "Oceanic" and two or three others the Nagasaki dock is two or neccommodate my messel in the world. At Shanghai docking is limited to ships of the size of the "Siberla" or
The most remarkable pro” **Manchuria," gross made in recent years in the ship- building and docking industry is the increase of floating docks and the applica- tion of electricity as the motive power. In American and German shipbuilding yards much use is made of electricity, whereas in Japan it it is only in the Kawasaki and Nagasaki yards where this power is employ- ed. Improvements in this direction, how- ever, are being made. The Mitsu Bishi Yards at Kobe have now fitted up two electrical dynamos having a power of 1,000 and 1,500 kilowatts respectively, and they will begin working at the end of this niouth.--Japan Chronicle.

IN WEIGHT SINCE UBING DOAN'S BACKCAKE KIDNEY PILLS.
21, Moore's Lane, Standish, near Wigan, England.
YOUR Doan's Backache Kidney gold to me. Before using them I had long been a sufferer with kidney complaint. The slightest cold or chill told on my kidneys, rendering their action irregular and un- natural. The secretions were thick, and contained a white, chalky sediment after atanding. At times the water was scarce, and painful in passing; frequently, too, I have been compelled to leave my bed several time, during the night.
been worth their weight
Sometimes on rising in the mornings I scarcely dared to draw my breath, because of the awful stabbing pain in the back." I got reduced to a very low state, and though I tried many medicines, nothing relievod me except your pills.
I am sure you will share my joy when tell you that I have been splendidly cured by Doan's Backache Kidney Pills. I get up in the mornings now without feeling the slightest pain in my back; and I have gained 171bs, in weight. I owe my splendid cure to Doan's Pills, and I shall be only too glad to recommend them.
Believe me, yours faithfully,
(Signed) J. DANIELS Some months later our representative had the pleasure of seeing Mr Daniels, who declared himself to be still enjoying good health and freedom from kidney complaint. When the kidneys are well, they filter out from Bibs. to 4lbs, of watery waste (urine) every day. You can soon tell when this work is not being properly done, because the impurities will cause urinary disorders, gravel, pain in the back and folha, diny apolla; every change of the weather will affect you, making you feel miserable, weak and nervous; watery swellings may appear beneath the eyes or in the ankles, the sight will be blurted.AY XERROTE
