Rock Drilling Contest.

On Christmas-day, at the Durban-Roed-- poort Deep, a novel item was introduced into the programme of sports there held, This took the form of a rock-drilling contest between picked gangs of Chinese and

Kaffire. Ten of the best drillers a-side were picked, and time allowed for their work was 30 minutes. The contest was witnessed by a large crowd of interested white spectators, who evinced the liveliest intercat in the respective merits of the yellow and sable contestants." The struggle was entered into with zest by the mine boys ehosen, who plied their hammers with all the dexterity and strength at their com- mand. At the conclusion it was found that the Chinese had drilled 71 inches as against 68 inches by the Kafiri. The result was loudly applauded by the spectators. Later in the afternoon there was tug-of-war between Chinese and natives, when the Celestia's again proved their superiority over their dusky anta. gonists,

This will be done shortly before the Princess maker her state entry into Spain by way of Irun,

The Princess will stay with her family either at the Prado or at the Palace of Aranjues, but probably at the Prado, and a special station will be made on the rail. long drive from Madrid, way to avoid a hitherto necessary to get to the Palace. Her stay at the Prado is fixed by precedent ab six days, during which she will receive oficial visits from all authoalties, the officeri of the King's Household, the Cortes, and the Senate. Two days before the marriage the ceremony of "Toma de Dichos" the solemn reading of the marriage contract, will be performed.

THE LATEST AIR-SHIP, The Santos Dumont airship. No. 14, häs a rather long cigar-shaped body. The car, which is susponded about 10 ft. from the balloon body by fine steel piano wires, is made very short in the present case. The basket is very small and light, and i■ just sufficient to hold the aeronaut. Contrary to the method which Santos-Dumont used in his former cars,
