8. Army, has announced that thorignal corps has perfected a wireless telegraph receiver which will enable the army to intercept and INSPECTION
read the messages of every system of wire- :
less telegraphy in uge.
The news will be of special interest to foreign governments, for if it be true that the United States army receivers can inter- cept the messages sant by every wireless telegraph system in use, wireless telegraphy as a method of secret communication, should trouble over arise between that country and any foreign foe, would be of no advantage to an enemy of the h ited Stales.
It was while discursing a report that Commander Peary, when he started on his latest dash for the North Pole, had taken along a wireless, te'egraph apparatus that would keep him in communication with the rest of the world, and that the government had no station equipped with the вате apparatus at which
to receive the messages, that: General Greely let it be known that the army had invented a type of wireless receiver that will enable it to receive wireless moesages transmitted by any system.
"The new army receivers," said General Greely, invented by the signal corps,. intercept and record the messages of all known systems."
Asked for further explanation of the invention, General Greely dismissed his interviewer with the ststement:
The signal corps service is absolutely secrot, and will remain so."
An idea of the effect this invention will have on wireless telegraphy may be gather- ed from fact that at the present time the United States navy uses three systems of wireless telegraphy, the Fessenden, the Arco-Slaby and the De Forest. Inter-' communication between the vessels and the navy yards using three systems has been impossible.
