and her power over him."

That is the conclusion arrived at by Dr 'Bernard Hollander, the eminent brain and nerve specialist, who recently read a paper on "Woman, her brain, mental capacity, and character," to the London Ethological Society.

Although woman's brains were smaller than men's that did not (said Dr Hollan der) make women inferior to man in intellect, When her intellect was develop. ed by education, and she excited her powers to the utmost, she could equal and even excel man.

וי

The smaller size of women's brains mere- ly meant that they had less force, less energy, and less animal passion than men. Their more complicated nervous system made them more emotional than men, more readily roused to joy and sorrow, more intenso in their grief.

The emotional side of the nature of many women was being put into the background by the increased development of their reason and self-control, and by their living an outdoor life. They were, for instance, SBB AG1, less subject to hysteria than their great-grandmothers used to be.

The danger was that women should starve their hearts by nourishing their intellects too much, and so become incapable of love. If women did not love, they could not expect men to love them. The marriage rate would go on declining, and women would have a worse and worse outlook.

Marriage and domesticity would always be to most women their chief hope and aim in life. But the women whom men wanted for wives were restful, happy women, and the over-cultured woman was neither happy nor restful.

Bo womanly. Avoid too much mentaĺ exertion. Let your emotions develop freely. That was the Don't starve your hearts."

gist of Dr Hollander's advice.

Here are some epigrammatic sparklets from his very interesting addreas :~-~-

Woman seeks happiness in the gratifica- tlon rather of her feelings than of hor intellect.

A woman's nature longs for companion- abip. She must have someone to talk to.

Love does not fill a man's nature as it does a woman's. It is only in his leisure hours that he devotes himself to the girl or woman of his choice.

Women, as a rule, are good conversa. tionalists. Men will talk if you give them a subject. Women can talk for hours upon nothing.

LONDON, February 7. There is an apparent deadlock at Al· gecieras.

(From Our Correspondent.)

PARIS, January 13. Who is to bo the President of the French Republic? The election, by secret voting, takes place on Saturday by the Senate. The two favoured candidates, are M. Fale lieres and M. Paul Doumer.

One expects nothing but the unexpected in France. Still French politicians seem to think that M. Fallieres will be the new president, and if there is no coup d'état he will be elected, I am inclined to think, with a majority of about 48.

M. Fallieros, the President of the Senate, is now in his 62nd year. He was born in a little village near Agen, the son of a poor farm labourer. His grande' father was a blacksmith's assistant,' and built a hut on common ground where the future president was born, "A prophet is not without honour save in his own country," is decidedly true of M. Fallieres, in his young daya at least. As boy he was, to say the least of it, a regular dunce. But from his childhood he was a good temperod joker, and could talk by the hour. Not

exactly a buffon, but a real French pessant native wit. As they say even now in this village le President when a boy could make a tombstone laugh. (This is a slight taste of Mark Twain or Bret Harte: il aurait
