HE HAD TOLD THE TRUTH,

At a dinner in a small town in Scotland

it was found that every one had contributed to the evening's entertainment but a certain Dr. MacDonald,

“Come, come, Dr MacDonald," said the chairman, we cannot lot you escape."

The doftor protested that he could not sing. My voice is altogether unmusical, and resembles the sound caused by the act of rubbing a brick along the panels of a door."

The company attributed this to the doctor's modesty. Good singors, he was reminded, always needed a lot of pressing.

"Very well," said the doctor, "if you can stand it I will sing."

Long before he had finished his audience

There was a painful silence as the doctor Bat down, broken at length by the voice of a braw Sebt at the end of the table." ***Man," he exclaimed, "your singin's no up to much, but your veracity's Just awful. You're richt abcot that brick.

AS Master Mariner of many years standing I have naturally been observant of these "fore. „casta," and as far sa I can make out, taking it at the least computation, at least 100 per cent are true. Because why you will say. The Observatory man apparently takes no chances—if it is raining he predicta rain, and similarly he figures on fine weather. If there is any error at all it is in calling them "forecasts, "

Yesterday's is a fair sample, 11.55 a.m. "Forecast-fresh S. W. to W. winds; equally and unsettled; probably thundershowers." That doesn't appear to jibe with the weather to-day. As a seafar- ing man I am bound to say that I think it would be quite possible to make some sort of a guesa 10 or 15 or even 24 hours ahead, basing calculations on weather reports up- and down the coast and Philippines. I am quite willing to admit that the forecast is LONDON, February 7.

SPORTING.

At the Race Course.

Royal weather favoured those at the this morning. Very little was done over the long distances, most of the ponies starting from the half-mile or quarter-mile out, but posts. Emerald King was two fast quarters was all he did. My notes last night concerning the doings of this pony were rather unfavourably commented upon at the course to-day. That, however, will show you that "Chinga" notes are tooked for in the columns of your parer. I may be also pardoned for here referring to the facetious paragraph which appeared in the CHINA MAIL of last night, concerning myself and other early risers. I appreciate it.

Thanks to the writer, but, with no intentions of being termed impolite, the inspiration required for such an effort I feel aura eclipses the enthu- entertained, writor ever siasm the other than theoretically, of paying an early visit to the Valley during training opera-

tions. Early rising, he admits, should be encouraged, but such an assertion requires come backing up, don't you think? Why not a visit to the racecourse! Better late than never. Of course this has little to do with the Prince's visit, so I will feel my- self attered if it finds room in your paper to day.

The following times were taken :-

DERBY PONIES.

Emerald King, one quarter, 31. Trotted round once, then one quarter, 23

Gold King did the same, his quarters be-

LADY HALDON has publicly acknowledged the great benefits she has derived from Dr Williams' pink pills. My heart became seriously affected,' said her ladyship. Symptoms of advanced anemia showed, with most acute indigestion. Food caused me such misery that I practically starved myself. My whole system was deranged, and I could not sleep. I gave a trial to Dr Williams' pink pills, and within three days was astonished at the marvellous improve. ment, Very soon I wra delighted to find my complaint had vanished. My goneral health was such that I had not enjoyed for

many years."

MADAME NELLIE COPE, the gifted soprano, has now so many pupils for singing that the seldom accepts other engagements. She once had other reasons for her refusals. 'For years,' she states, I suffered so from

I had fearful excessive weakness and anemia that any headaches, feelings of sickness, and often exertion was impossible. gasped for breath. But a nurse advised me to take Dr Willisme' pink pills, and I can truthfully say these pills make new. rich blood. I have no headaches now; and to all anemic girls I would say, Dr Williams' pink pills are the only perfect, medicine I know. Madame Nellie Cope's address is 11, Cricketfield-road, London.

Not only for women, bat for men also, are Dr Williams' pink pills valuable. This has been proved by countless instances of cures published in the newspapers. These pills have cured anemia, indigestion, pal- pitations, consumption, cozema and skin disorders, neuralgia, St. Vitus' dance, rheumatism, sciation, paralysis, locomotor araxy, and ladies' ailments. But only the genuine pills cure-those labelled in full, Dr Williams' pink pills for pale people, Substitutes are useless; in case of doubt
