GEORGE IV'S MARRIAGE.

A Morganatic Alliance.

It has been generally accepted that George IV., King of Great Britain and Ireland from 1820 to 183, was married to Mra Fitzherbert (Maria Anne Smythe) while Prince of Wales. Among the documents- was the marriage certificate of the widow and the Prince. The Brooklyn Citizen re- marks on this marriage :

Rescue at Sea.

*

We have been informed of a daring rescue which was made by one of the officers of the Canton steamer Wing Chai" on January 24. From the particulars we have it appears that as the "Wing Chai" was on her way to Macao on the date men- tioned those Sf-board saw a Chinese junk caprizo. The sea was rough and choppy at the time, which prevented the boats from being lowered, but the "Wing Chai" was stopped and lifebuoys thrown to the Chinese struggling in the water.

As the people in the water were in imminent danger of being drowned one of the "Wing Chai's" officers juîmped over. board and at the peril of his own life went to the resour. After a great deal of diffi- culty he succeeded in saving three of the Chinese, but the remainder, whose number we are unable to give, were lost:

Such a plucky action deserves the great- ost credit that can be bestowed and the heroic rescue should be brought to the notice of the Humane Society.

THE PROPOSED CANTON- HSINNING RAILWAY

Commencement to be Made,

A Canton letter to Shanghai states that Mr Chen Yi-hsi, Managing Director of the Syndicate which is to construct the Canton-

Brinuing (colloquially, Sunning) Railway,

arrived in that city about the middle of last month from Peking and Shanghai, and bas informed those interested in the proposed line that with the beginning of February steps will at once be taken to mark out the road-bed and that materials to construct the line have already been contracted for and will be ready for use with the completion of the survey work, Bo that no time will be lost by unnecessary delays. In fact, according to Mr Chên, everything will work without a hitch as there is no obstruction in the way, that ho can see, to a speedy completion of this railway.
