Flogging of Suspects.
ODESSA, December 15, Under the heading "Raising the Cur tain," the "Odesskin Novosti" publishes the following letter from a lately retired member of the Odessa police :—
The Odessa and other Southern journals have lately published terrible reports of the brutal treatment of politicst prisoners in the fortress of Schlüsselburg. These journals may, or may not, be surpri sed to learn that political offenders have been subjected to the samo infamous barbarity in the district polico stations in this city. Of what occurred under Neid. hardt (the civil governor) I know little or nothing, as I left the service in utter disgust shortly after the late Gradonatchal- nik's appointment.
“On February 23, there was a Red Flag demonstration in Doribassofskata- street. The demonstrators wore students, artisans, and others, including a number of women and girls. They were surrounded by Cosmoks, and taken to the Michailofsky
↓
district polico station, where I was then
obief warder. The preparations for the prisoners' reception were rapidlly made. The station staff were furnished with rods of thick indiarubber.
"With these the prisoners were flagged about the head till they foll, with distorted feature, at the feet of the oxecutioners. Then the second operation was put into force. The floggers took the prisoners' heade butween their legs, compressing their victims' necka between their knees in order to prevent their cries, and, stripping their clothing up to the nook, dealt upon their backs from one to two hundred savage strokes with the rubber knout. After this punishment the prisoners, more dead than alive, were thrust, with kicks, cuffs, and sabre-flats, into a foul b ck room. There were fifty-five of them. They were left without food or drink until next day, when they were divided among four distriot stations. The sixteer left in the Michailof sky portion were placed in a room the walls and floors of which I was first instructed

A few days ago the annual meeting of WARNDT to IGN our Firm FER Jamos Lebister, Moji January 29,' C.000,
the Bible and Religious Tract Societies was held at the London Mission House. These two organizations have, as some of our readers know, a depot in D'Aguilar Street,
which, though unpretentious, proves itself to be a centre of considerable activity, from which many copies of the Scriptures, both in Chinese and in English, as well as large numbers of the Religious Tract Society's publications, also both in Chinese and in English, are issued.
The healthy literature of this society as "well as other books of the same type are
kept in stock, and judging from the num ber of books and tracts sold during the
PROCURATION.

gear, there are many readers of this kind. Your
of literature.
Of the Scriptures, 1048 Bibles, 1786 New Testaments, and 2687 portions have, during this year, been sold. Most of these are in the Chinese language, though no less than eleven different languages for the whole Bible have been in demand. Of Books, Tracts, and leaflets, the number disposed of is 14,043. Excluding those Gold to English readers, the Chinese volumes find their way to other parts of the adjoining province, and even to the Chinese in America and Australia.
It has been decided that there shall be a "Bible Sunday." in liongkong and Feb 11th has been fixed on as the date. Sermons will be preached in all the churches, and collections taken up to assist the Parent Society in its good work. Englishmen have not yet tired of the grand diction, the searching morality, and the lofty ideals of the old Book. On the other
hand the increasing number of Bibles and Religious books purchased by the Chinese, shows that either the Christian community is rapidly Increasing or the non Christian are attracted to and willing to read the Scriptures. Probably both assumptions are
