Flogging of Suspects.

ODESSA, December 15, Under the heading "Raising the Cur tain," the "Odesskin Novosti" publishes the following letter from a lately retired member of the Odessa police :—

The Odessa and other Southern journals have lately published terrible reports of the brutal treatment of politicst prisoners in the fortress of Schlüsselburg. These journals may, or may not, be surpri sed to learn that political offenders have been subjected to the samo infamous barbarity in the district polico stations in this city. Of what occurred under Neid. hardt (the civil governor) I know little or nothing, as I left the service in utter disgust shortly after the late Gradonatchal- nik's appointment.

“On February 23, there was a Red Flag demonstration in Doribassofskata- street. The demonstrators wore students, artisans, and others, including a number of women and girls. They were surrounded by Cosmoks, and taken to the Michailofsky

district polico station, where I was then

obief warder. The preparations for the prisoners' reception were rapidlly made. The station staff were furnished with rods of thick indiarubber.

"With these the prisoners were flagged about the head till they foll, with distorted feature, at the feet of the oxecutioners. Then the second operation was put into force. The floggers took the prisoners' heade butween their legs, compressing their victims' necka between their knees in order to prevent their cries, and, stripping their clothing up to the nook, dealt upon their backs from one to two hundred savage strokes with the rubber knout. After this punishment the prisoners, more dead than alive, were thrust, with kicks, cuffs, and sabre-flats, into a foul b ck room. There were fifty-five of them. They were left without food or drink until next day, when they were divided among four distriot stations. The sixteer left in the Michailof sky portion were placed in a room the walls and floors of which I was first instructed

of literature.

Of the Scriptures, 1048 Bibles, 1786 New Testaments, and 2687 portions have, during this year, been sold. Sermons will be preached in all the churches, and collections taken up to assist the Parent Society in its good work. Englishmen have not yet tired of the grand diction, the searching morality, and the lofty ideals of the old Book. On the other

hand the increasing number of Bibles and Religious books purchased by the Chinese, shows that either the Christian community is rapidly Increasing or the non Christian are attracted to and willing to read the Scriptures. Probably both assumptions are
